For a mostly one-way internet radio simulcast, start with Normal latency in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube describes it as the best fit for broadcasts without audience interaction and says it provides the lowest viewer buffering. Choose Low or Ultra-low only if faster host-and-audience exchanges matter enough to accept more buffering risk. Low and Ultra-low latency do not support 4K.
What YouTube’s latency setting changes
Latency is the delay between the stream being captured and encoded and viewers seeing it. The setting controls how much data YouTube’s player reads ahead: a larger buffer can absorb delivery fluctuations, while a smaller buffer can make interaction feel faster but leaves less room to handle them. None of the modes guarantees a fixed end-to-end delay. Network congestion and other delivery conditions can add delay even when the connection can sustain the stream’s average bitrate.
Which latency setting should a radio station use?
| Setting | YouTube’s stated use and viewer guidance | Fit for an internet radio station | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | For non-interactive broadcasts; YouTube describes it as the highest-quality option with the lowest viewer buffering. All resolutions and live features are supported. | Best starting point for continuous music or a mostly one-way station simulcast. | More delay than the faster modes, but the larger playback buffer is more tolerant of delivery variation. |
| Low | For limited interaction, such as polls where an immediate response is not necessary. YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds. | Consider it when chat or occasional host interaction is part of the program and a short delay is acceptable. | Less playback buffer and more exposure to buffering than Normal. The under-10-second figure is approximate guidance for most viewers, not a guarantee. |
| Ultra-low | For real-time conversation with viewers. YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds. | Consider it when hosts actively respond to chat and the stream delivery is reliable. | Less buffer and greater buffering risk; unavailable with HLS and does not support 4K. The under-five-second figure is approximate guidance, not a guarantee. |
YouTube’s approximate latency descriptions are not promises for every viewer, connection, or playback device. For radio, a stable, uninterrupted listening experience is often more important than shaving seconds off the delay; use a faster mode only when the program benefits from interaction.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Set latency in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the encoder-based broadcast.
- Open the stream’s Stream settings and locate the latency selection.
- Choose Normal latency for a continuous, mostly one-way station stream. Choose Low latency or Ultra-low latency only when audience interaction justifies the buffering trade-off.
- Confirm that the choice fits the resolution and ingestion protocol. Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K; HLS disables Ultra-low.
- Before a scheduled broadcast, test with representative program audio and the actual encoder and network. Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test.
This latency choice applies to encoder-based streams. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not expose this latency selection.

Account for the ingestion protocol
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio for these protocols and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Check that the encoder is configured for the selected protocol and use settings it supports.
HLS
YouTube describes HLS ingestion as higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. Ultra-low latency is disabled when HLS is selected. For HLS, YouTube specifies transport-stream segments lasting one to four seconds; shorter segments reduce latency. It also requires a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.

Test the station feed before going live
- Use representative content: test with audio and movement similar to the actual program, rather than a quiet or unusually simple test signal.
- Leave upload headroom: YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Treat this as setup guidance, not a guarantee of smooth playback.
- Account for backup delivery: if sending primary and backup streams, include both streams’ bitrates when checking total upload capacity.
- Watch stream health: monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback during the test and adjust the encoder or network setup if delivery is unstable.
- Make the choice based on the real trade-off: compare interaction delay, buffering exposure, resolution support, and protocol compatibility—not latency alone.
There is no single setting YouTube prescribes for every radio station. The right choice depends on whether the broadcast is interactive, the chosen protocol and resolution, and whether the encoder and network can reliably deliver the stream.

| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra-low is unavailable | The stream is using HLS, for which YouTube disables Ultra-low. | Confirm the ingestion protocol. If the station requires HLS, plan for its higher segment-based latency rather than expecting Ultra-low. |
| 4K is unavailable after selecting a faster mode | Low and Ultra-low latency do not support 4K. | Use Normal latency if 4K is required, or choose a supported lower resolution if faster interaction is more important. |
| Viewers report buffering after moving from Normal to Low or Ultra-low | The faster setting reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer, making delivery variation more noticeable. | Test the actual network and encoder setup, monitor stream health, and verify reliable upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended headroom. Consider returning to Normal if interaction speed is not essential. |
| Viewer delay is longer or less consistent than expected | YouTube’s latency figures are approximate for most viewers; protocol, congestion, and other delivery conditions affect actual delay. | Check whether the stream uses HLS, assess network conditions, and test the complete delivery path instead of treating a mode’s approximate figure as a guarantee. |
| Stream health degrades during primary-and-backup delivery | The connection may be carrying more total bitrate than the available upload capacity can reliably sustain. | Include the primary and backup streams together when estimating bandwidth needs and preserve upload headroom. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your station’s 24/7 schedule consists of uploaded recordings or a playlist rather than a live microphone or camera feed, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is a separate way to run prerecorded programming; it does not replace choosing an appropriate YouTube latency setting for an encoder-based broadcast.
