Premium Lite can be the better-value choice if you mainly watch regular videos and want fewer interruptions. Full YouTube Premium is the stronger fit if you rely on YouTube Music, want broader ad-free viewing, or use Premium features that Lite leaves out. The right answer depends on your habits and the actual prices YouTube offers in your market.
I can’t verify the personal claim that I downgraded for a year, so I won’t present that as firsthand experience. Here’s what the plans include—and what to weigh before deciding whether full Premium is worth the extra cost.

What’s the difference between YouTube Premium Lite and Premium?
Lite is a lower-priced membership focused on reducing ads on most standard videos. Full Premium offers broader ad-free viewing, YouTube Music Premium, and additional membership features. Neither plan removes every promotion that appears in YouTube content: creator-read sponsorships and some live-event or Primetime Channels promotions may still be present.

| What you want to do | Premium Lite | Full Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Watch regular videos with fewer ads | Most videos are ad-free; ads may remain in other areas of YouTube. | Ad-free viewing across millions of videos, subject to remaining creator and some event or channel promotions. |
| Watch music videos or use YouTube for music | Ads may appear on music content. YouTube Music Premium is not included. | Includes YouTube Music Premium and broader ad-free viewing. |
| Watch Shorts or browse/search | Ads may appear on Shorts and while searching or browsing. | Broader ad-free benefits apply, but do not treat them as a promise to remove creator sponsorships. |
| Download videos or play them in the background | Available for most non-music videos, but not Shorts or music content. | Included more broadly as part of Premium benefits. |
| Use additional membership features | Does not include features such as Continue Watching, Jump Ahead, queuing, or high-quality audio and video. | Includes additional Premium features; availability can vary. |

What ads does Premium Lite still show?
Lite is not an all-YouTube ad-free plan. YouTube says ads may still appear on music content, Shorts, and while you search or browse. That distinction matters if you move quickly between regular videos, Shorts, and music: the plan’s reduced interruptions on most videos do not necessarily eliminate the ad surfaces you encounter most.
Also distinguish YouTube-served ads from promotions built into a video. A creator may read a sponsor message or include a promotion in the content itself; paying for Premium does not remove that kind of sponsorship. YouTube notes that some live-event and Primetime Channels promotions may also remain.

Can you download videos and play them in the background with Lite?
Yes, for most eligible non-music videos. YouTube announced the Lite expansion on March 2, 2026. In the official TeamYouTube post, Google employee Rob wrote: “Now, Premium Lite will include Background Play and Downloads, so you can watch most videos ad-free, offline, and in the background.” The same announcement makes clear that these benefits do not apply to Shorts or music content.
The exclusions include official or premium music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and some user-generated videos containing music-partner content. So if your main reason for subscribing is to download music videos or keep music playing with the screen off, Lite does not meet that need. See the TeamYouTube announcement for the dated feature details.

- Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
Does Premium Lite include YouTube Music Premium?
No. YouTube Music Premium is included with full YouTube Premium, not Premium Lite. Lite may still reduce ads on most regular YouTube videos, but it is not a substitute for the separate music benefits and music-content coverage included with full Premium.
When is Premium Lite the better value?
Lite is worth considering if your viewing is mostly standard, non-music videos and you want fewer interruptions without paying for music and other Premium features. Its value falls if your routine depends on Shorts, music, downloads or background play for music, or features Lite excludes.

- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Easy to use: With a Google Play gift code, you never have to worry about expiration dates or fees.
- Endless games to explore: Find and play old and new favorites – from mind-bending puzzles to epic quests and more.
- Choose Lite if you mainly watch regular videos and the lower price shown to you is worth it for fewer ads on most of them.
- Consider full Premium if YouTube Music Premium, broader ad-free viewing, or additional Premium features would replace something you already use or solve a regular annoyance.
- Compare your actual use rather than assuming “ad-free” means the same thing across every YouTube surface.
How to compare the price in your market
YouTube does not give one universal Lite price on its help page; it directs viewers to the membership page for the offer available to them. Compare the current price displayed for Lite with the current full Premium price for your account, in your location, before deciding. Avoid relying on an old price from another country or plan type. YouTube’s Lite help page and Premium signup information explain where to check membership options.

Would a household or student plan change the calculation?
If more than one eligible person in your household would use Premium, compare the individual price with YouTube’s family or two-person options. YouTube describes family plans for up to six household members and two-person plans for two household members. Student memberships are available subject to eligibility verification and annual verification. Plan availability and terms should be checked for your location.
YouTube’s stated streaming limits are one device at a time for individual Premium or Lite memberships, up to six household members or streams on family plans, and up to two household members or streams on two-person plans, with exceptions for free movies. See YouTube’s plan information and streaming limits for the applicable details.
