If YouTube buffers, freezes, fails to load, or shows a green player, first work out whether the problem affects one video, one device, or your whole network. Try another video and, if possible, another supported device. Then follow the steps for the symptom and playback environment below, starting with the easiest reversible checks.
First, narrow down where the glitch occurs
Write down any error message and check whether the issue affects one video or several. Try a second video; then compare YouTube on another device or connection if one is available. If the same problem affects multiple streaming services, the cause may be with the device or its connection rather than YouTube. YouTube advises consulting the device manufacturer for broader device troubleshooting.
A useful pattern is:
- One video only: Try another video before changing device settings.
- One browser or app: Restart or update that browser or app, then test another supported playback option.
- Several devices on the same network: Check the connection and how much bandwidth other devices are using.
- Several streaming services: Investigate the device or network, not just YouTube.

Test another connection
Try the video using a different internet connection. On a phone, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then retry. Mobile data use may incur charges or count against your plan. If the video works on the alternate connection, the original network is a useful place to investigate; this test alone does not identify the exact cause.

Compare your connection with YouTube’s guidance
Run a speed test on the device you use to watch, if possible. YouTube gives the following approximate recommended sustained speeds for different resolutions in its video-error guidance:

These figures are guidance, not a guarantee that playback will be smooth at a particular resolution. Other devices using the network can leave less capacity for the player. YouTube’s video-error guidance lists the figures; its separate system requirements page covers connection and device requirements in a different context.

Lower playback quality
Reduce the video’s quality and see whether playback stabilizes. If it does, the connection may not be sustaining the higher resolution under current conditions. You can raise quality again later; lowering it is a diagnostic step, not a permanent requirement.

For a TV or streaming device, check connection speed near the set. Distance from the router, physical obstructions, wireless interference, and other active devices may affect the connection. YouTube says a hardwired connection instead of Wi-Fi may help. Treat Ethernet as an optional test: the router and playback device need compatible ports or adapters, and a cable will not resolve an app, browser, graphics, account, video-specific, or service problem.

If playback freezes or errors in a browser
Refresh the browser environment
- Close unused tabs, then restart the browser and retry the video.
- Install available browser updates and restart the computer if needed.
- If loading problems continue, clear the browser’s cache and cookies. This may sign you out of websites or remove saved site data.
- Open a private or incognito window and test playback with extensions disabled.
If the private-window test works, re-enable extensions selectively to look for a conflict. YouTube notes that ad-blocking extensions may affect playback, but the test does not prove that any particular extension is responsible. YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions also cover browser checks; supported browsers are not limited to Chrome.
If the YouTube app glitches on a phone or tablet
- Close and reopen the YouTube app, then try another video.
- Check for updates to the YouTube app and the device’s operating system.
- Restart the device and test playback again.
- If your operating system offers the option, clear the YouTube app’s cache.
- If possible, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see whether the connection changes the result.
Menu names and cache controls vary by operating system and device. YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting page includes platform-specific advice.

If YouTube will not play properly on a TV or streaming device
- Check the internet connection near the TV or device.
- Manually lower playback quality and see whether the video becomes stable.
- Quit and reopen the YouTube app.
- If relevant, sign out and back in.
- Restart the TV or streaming device.
- Install available app and system software updates.
If the problem remains, compare playback on another supported device or method—for example, casting from a phone or connecting a computer over HDMI—if your equipment supports it. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting instructions and video-error guidance cover additional checks.
If the player is green but you can hear audio
A green picture with audio is a specific display symptom; do not assume the same steps apply to every black screen or playback failure. Try another browser first. In Chrome, YouTube’s green-screen guidance recommends turning off Use hardware acceleration when available and updating the computer’s graphics driver. For the hardware-acceleration setting in Chrome, open Settings, search for “hardware acceleration,” turn off Use hardware acceleration when available, and relaunch the browser if prompted. In another browser, follow that browser’s own help instructions.

If the glitch persists
Record the exact error, the video and device affected, and which checks you tried. Test another supported device if possible. After the problem occurs, send feedback through YouTube’s in-app Help and Feedback flow. For device-wide update problems or trouble that also affects other services, consult the device manufacturer’s support resources.
