If your YouTube stream drops during a power cut, OBS cannot recover until the computer, network connection and encoder are working again. Configure each part of that chain: set the PC to recover when AC power returns, have OBS launch, allow time for the internet to come back, and decide whether YouTube should start the broadcast automatically when it receives OBS’s signal. Then test the complete sequence in a non-public stream.

What must recover after a power cut

A successful restart involves more than YouTube’s auto-start setting. The full chain is:

  1. Mains power returns.
  2. The PC starts, if its firmware is configured to do so.
  3. The router, modem or ONT and internet connection come back online.
  4. OBS launches in the appropriate Windows account or session.
  5. OBS sends a valid encoder feed to YouTube.
  6. YouTube receives the signal and either starts the broadcast automatically or waits for you to press Go Live.
  7. You confirm the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

YouTube’s auto-start controls what happens after it detects an encoder feed; it does not turn on a computer or open OBS. The exact power-recovery control depends on the PC or motherboard, so check the manufacturer’s documentation rather than relying on a universal BIOS/UEFI menu path.

Configure recovery one stage at a time

1. Check which equipment loses power

Work out whether the outage affects only the streaming PC or also the router, modem or ONT. After power returns, the PC may start before the network is ready. Confirm that the network equipment has restarted and the internet is reachable before treating an OBS connection failure as a stream-key problem.

2. Set the computer’s response to restored AC power

Some PCs offer a firmware setting that controls whether the machine stays off or powers on when AC power returns. The label and availability vary by model. Find the instructions for your specific computer or motherboard from its manufacturer, and test the setting under controlled conditions before depending on it for a scheduled stream.

3. Have OBS start after the PC boots

Configure OBS to launch using a Windows startup mechanism appropriate to your version, account and setup. Make sure the account used for streaming is the one that starts and runs OBS. Windows startup behavior depends on the machine and account; consult current Microsoft guidance for your Windows version rather than assuming one set of clicks applies to every PC.

An OBS Project Forums thread started in 2024 discusses a startup shortcut and Task Scheduler, but it is community advice, not a universal or official procedure. Verify any approach on your own PC and OBS version. In particular, test what happens when OBS starts before the router or internet connection is ready: an initial failed connection may not be retried successfully without a delay or tested retry strategy.

4. Verify OBS’s YouTube connection details

In OBS, check the configured YouTube service, server or URL, and stream key. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential the encoder uses to send the feed. A power cut alone does not mean the key needs resetting. If you reset it or OBS reports a key error, copy the current key from YouTube Live Control Room into OBS. Keep the key private; do not expose it in screenshots, recordings or logs.

5. Choose whether YouTube should start the broadcast automatically

YouTube’s auto-start setting affects broadcast behavior when YouTube receives encoder input. It does not launch OBS or power on the PC.

YouTube setting What happens after OBS sends a feed Choose it when
Auto-start on YouTube can start the broadcast when it detects encoder input. You want the stream to go live without someone present to press Go Live.
Auto-start off You may need to press Go Live in Live Control Room after OBS begins sending. You want a person to review the stream before it becomes visible to viewers.

Check the selected stream and its current settings in Live Control Room, then confirm the actual behavior in a private or unlisted test. YouTube’s controls and workflow are described in Manage live stream settings.

6. Allow for a late network connection

If OBS starts while the router or ISP connection is still recovering, the first attempt to reach YouTube may fail. A delayed OBS launch or a retry mechanism may help, but the right implementation depends on the PC, Windows version and OBS version. Test it on the target machine; do not assume OBS will recover automatically from every failed first attempt. The discussion in the OBS Project Forums thread on autostart after reboot is community experience, not an official guarantee.

Test the full recovery sequence safely

YouTube recommends testing the encoder, checking the preview and stream health, and testing failover rather than assuming it works. Use a private or unlisted test stream and check each failure point separately before relying on automation for a public broadcast.

  1. Start OBS normally and confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and sound.
  2. Briefly interrupt the internet connection, then check whether OBS reconnects and whether YouTube’s preview and stream health recover.
  3. Reboot the PC normally and verify that the right account starts, OBS opens, and the encoder connects.
  4. If your hardware permits a safe, controlled test, confirm that the PC responds as intended after AC power is restored. Do not create an uncontrolled outage to test a live event.
  5. Check Live Control Room to confirm whether the broadcast actually started or is waiting for a manual Go Live action.

Repeat tests after changing firmware, Windows startup behavior, OBS settings or network equipment. YouTube’s guidance covers preparation and monitoring in its live streaming tips for computers.

Troubleshoot the stage that failed

The computer stays off when power returns

Check the manufacturer’s documentation for your PC’s AC power-recovery behavior. YouTube settings and OBS cannot start a computer that remains powered off.

The computer starts, but OBS does not

Check the startup configuration and whether it runs under the Windows account or session used for streaming. Verify that OBS opens after an ordinary reboot before testing a power-recovery scenario.

OBS opens but cannot connect

First confirm that the internet connection is available and that the router or modem has finished restarting. Then check OBS’s connection status, logs and outbound upload capacity, followed by the configured YouTube server and stream key. YouTube recommends checking the encoder and outbound connection; OBS notes that dropped frames can result from an unstable connection or bitrate exceeding available capacity. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream and OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

OBS connects, but the YouTube broadcast does not go live

Check whether auto-start is disabled and the stream is waiting for you to press Go Live. Confirm that Live Control Room is showing the intended stream and that OBS has the current key. A working encoder connection and a started viewer-facing broadcast are separate states.

The stream reconnects, but a camera or capture source is missing

Check the source inside OBS separately from the connection to YouTube. A camera or capture device may need to reinitialize after power returns; a successful encoder reconnect does not establish that every source has recovered. Test the actual source and its behavior on your setup.

OBS looks healthy, but viewers see interruptions or poor stream health

A healthy OBS preview does not prove that the upload path to YouTube is stable. Check Live Control Room’s stream health, available upload bandwidth and other devices or users consuming the connection. YouTube recommends maintaining 20% upload bandwidth headroom; treat that as YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a stream will survive an outage. Its Streaming tips explain network preparation and monitoring.

Would a UPS help?

A UPS can keep selected equipment powered through some short interruptions, if it is sized for the actual load and required runtime. Consider the combined PC and network-equipment load, runtime at that load, outlet and plug compatibility, battery replacement and local service availability. A UPS does not configure firmware or launch Windows and OBS, and it cannot prevent an ISP outage or guarantee continuity through a long power cut.
