Neither Windows nor Linux is inherently cheaper to run for a YouTube looping stream. The reliable answer comes from measuring the complete Windows PC and Linux server under the same streaming workload, then calculating energy use at your local electricity rate. Hardware, encoding settings, peripherals and power management can matter more than the operating system.
How to compare a Windows PC and Linux server fairly
Run each machine separately with the same video, resolution, frame rate, codec where possible, bitrate, network conditions and test duration. Let each system reach its normal streaming state before measuring. Include the same continuously powered peripherals in both readings, and use the same measurement boundary—for example, at the wall outlet for the host and included peripherals.
- Define the setup. Decide whether the comparison includes only the host or also a display, external storage, network equipment or UPS. Keep that boundary consistent.
- Match the stream workload. Use the same source video and intended output settings on both hosts. YouTube’s encoder settings vary by resolution, frame rate and codec; use its current recommendations for your chosen configuration rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Measure over a representative interval. A plug-in electricity meter can record energy use at the wall. If draw fluctuates, a momentary watt reading may mislead; measure kWh over time and divide by the measurement period to find average power. The U.S. Department of Energy explains this time-averaging principle in its standby power measurement guidance. Its cited IEC 62301 procedures concern standby and low-power modes, not certification of a continuously encoding stream.
- Record the assumptions. Write down average watts or measured kWh, test duration, included equipment, stream settings and local electricity rate. Repeat or extend the measurement if the workload or power draw varies substantially.
A server’s label or power-supply rating is not its measured consumption. Server power varies with load and configuration; the DOE’s data-center IT efficiency guidance discusses metering and monitoring and is useful for measurement principles, not as a wattage estimate for a consumer server.
Calculate electricity cost from watts
Use average power and the actual hours streamed. The result estimates the energy portion of your bill:

- Energy (kWh) = average power (W) × hours ÷ 1,000.
- Energy charge = kWh × your electricity price per kWh.
- For a continuous 30-day month: monthly kWh = average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000.
For example, if a meter shows an average of 60 W for a system running continuously for 30 days, the estimate is 60 × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 43.2 kWh. Multiply 43.2 by your own energy rate to estimate that system’s energy charge. This excludes any fixed service fees, demand charges, taxes or tiered rates that may apply to your bill.
Do not substitute a generic rate for your tariff. DOE’s computer purchasing examples use 11¢/kWh as the average price at U.S. federal facilities as of July 2024; that dated federal-facility assumption is not a universal household electricity price. Why one system may draw more power
Hardware and configuration
CPU, GPU, power supply, storage, fans and motherboard all affect draw. A machine described as a server is not automatically more efficient than a desktop PC. Compare the specific systems you own or plan to buy.
Encoding and video content
Resolution, frame rate, codec and whether encoding uses software or hardware change the workload. A mostly static image may require different processing from moving footage, overlays or multiple outputs. Measure the content and settings you will actually stream; platform bitrate alone does not establish power use.

Operating system and power management
Drivers, background services, power profiles and idle-state behavior can differ between installations. Available evidence does not establish an operating-system-specific winner for this use, so a measured difference between two unlike machines cannot be attributed to Windows or Linux alone. DOE advises using suitable built-in power management, but sleep settings can interrupt an always-on stream; test changes without disrupting the broadcast.
Peripherals and power-chain losses
A monitor left on, external devices, network equipment and UPS conversion losses can change whole-setup energy use. If those are part of the real deployment, include them consistently or list them separately. The measurement point matters: a reading at the outlet captures more of the power chain than a component-level estimate.

Compare total cost, not only the electricity bill
Energy cost is only one part of the decision. Also consider hardware purchase cost, setup and maintenance time, monitoring, reliability, recovery after a failure, whether the host can produce the required settings, and any cloud subscription cost. A small energy advantage may not outweigh a hardware purchase or the effort of maintaining a dedicated machine.
YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming and its encoder guide lists a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming of pre-recorded video. That is a possible alternative to leaving a local host running, but the listing does not establish a service’s current price, performance or total energy footprint. - Using a power-supply rating as consumption: measure actual wall energy under the streaming workload.
