YouTube can buffer even when your broadband plan is fast: the speed reaching your playback device, Wi-Fi conditions, stream quality, browser or app, and device performance all matter. Start by lowering the video quality and comparing playback on another device or connection; those quick checks help show whether the issue is tied to the video, the device, or the network path.

Why is YouTube buffering when my internet is fast?

A broadband plan’s advertised speed—or one speed-test result—does not show what your TV, phone, or computer is receiving during playback. Wi-Fi range, interference, other devices sharing the network, and the route between your device and YouTube can all affect the stream. YouTube recommends trying a different connection and, on a computer, comparing Wi-Fi with a wired connection. YouTube Help’s buffering and loading troubleshooting covers these checks.

The video’s selected resolution matters too. YouTube adjusts quality based on factors such as connection speed, screen size, the original upload quality, and browser support for newer formats. You can choose a lower resolution manually to see whether playback becomes steadier. YouTube Help explains video quality settings.

Check whether the problem is the video, device, or connection

  1. Try another video. If only one video loads slowly, the issue may be limited to that playback rather than YouTube generally.
  2. Try another supported device or browser. Compare playback on the same network. If YouTube works elsewhere, focus on the original device, app, or browser.
  3. Lower the playback quality. In the player, open Settings and select Quality, then temporarily choose a lower resolution. If buffering eases, the higher-quality stream may be difficult to sustain on that playback path.
  4. Compare connection paths. Where practical, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or test a wired connection on a computer. Keep mobile data charges in mind. A change in performance points toward the connection path, but does not identify its exact cause.
  5. Run a speed test near the playback device. YouTube specifically recommends testing right next to a TV when troubleshooting TV playback. A result taken elsewhere in the home may not represent the TV’s connection. See YouTube’s TV troubleshooting steps.

Compare your connection with YouTube’s approximate speed guidance

YouTube publishes approximate sustained-speed recommendations by resolution. They are guidance, not guaranteed minimums, and meeting them does not ensure smooth playback on every device or network route. The support page does not state a publication year; figures below are from YouTube Help accessed in 2026. YouTube’s buffering guidance and video quality and resolution guidance provide the figures.

Video resolution Approximate recommended sustained speed
360p 0.7 Mbps
480p 1.1 Mbps
720p 2.5 Mbps
1080p 5 Mbps
4K UHD 20 Mbps

Compare the figures with a speed test taken near the playback device, but do not treat a single result as a diagnosis. If a lower resolution plays reliably while a higher one buffers, that is a useful clue about the current stream or connection conditions—not proof that your internet plan is inadequate.

Fix buffering in the YouTube mobile app

  • Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to compare connections; be mindful of your data plan.
  • Clear the YouTube app cache using your device’s app settings.
  • Check for YouTube app and system updates, then restart the device if playback remains slow.

Fix slow YouTube playback on a TV

  • Run a speed test close to the TV, not in another room.
  • Move the TV or streaming device nearer to the router if possible, and reduce obstructions or sources of interference.
  • Temporarily reduce the number of devices using the network to check whether shared use is contributing.
  • Close and reopen YouTube; check for app or system updates; restart or power-cycle the TV or streaming device.

These are troubleshooting checks, not evidence that router hardware is necessarily at fault. If several streaming services have the same problem, YouTube directs users to the device manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance. YouTube Help: buffering or loading videos.

What to do if YouTube is still slow

If the problem persists, repeat the comparisons with one variable changed at a time: another video, device, browser, or connection. If YouTube alone is affected, that pattern is different from a problem occurring across multiple streaming services; it does not by itself prove where the fault lies. Use YouTube’s in-app feedback option to report the issue, including your device, connection type, selected video quality, and troubleshooting steps already tried. YouTube recommends this when its playback steps do not resolve the problem. Open YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
