If YouTube rejected your copyright appeal and then removed your livestream, first confirm whether you have an actual copyright strike. A rejected Content ID appeal is not itself a strike. If a valid copyright removal request led to a takedown, your remaining options may include submitting a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken, asking the claimant to retract the request, or completing Copyright School and waiting for an eligible strike to expire. Each route has different requirements, and none automatically restores the stream in every case.
First, identify which copyright stage you are in
YouTube treats Content ID claims and copyright removal requests as different processes. A claim can be disputed and appealed; if the claimant rejects the appeal and submits a copyright removal request that YouTube considers valid, YouTube removes the video and applies a copyright strike. Check the notice in YouTube Studio and any email from YouTube to establish what happened and what step is pending. YouTube Help explains the strike process.
- Rejected Content ID appeal, but no removal: This is not by itself a copyright strike. Check the current claim status and any further action available in the notice.
- Copyright removal notice and active strike: The stream was removed following a removal request. You may be able to counter-notify if you believe the removal was mistaken, seek a retraction, or wait for eligible strike expiration.
- Counter notification pending or rejected: Follow the status and reason shown by YouTube. A rejection for missing legally required information may allow you to submit a new counter notification with the required information; it does not mean the content will be reinstated.
The exact notice matters: YouTube’s general guidance cannot establish whether your use was licensed, qualifies for a copyright exception, or is otherwise lawful.

If a valid removal request has taken down the livestream and applied a strike, YouTube identifies three routes for resolving the strike: counter notification, retraction by the claimant, or eligible strike expiration after Copyright School. Legal advice may also help you decide what to do when the facts or your rights are uncertain.

When a counter notification makes sense—and what it does
A counter notification is for content removed by mistake or misidentification, including a removal the creator believes was wrong because their use qualifies for an exception such as fair use. It requires legally significant statements about your right to use the material. Do not submit one merely because you disagree with the claimant or want another appeal; YouTube says the notice must meet its legal requirements before it is forwarded. See YouTube’s counter-notification guidance.
What happens after YouTube forwards it?
- YouTube reviews the submission for required information. If information is missing, it may reject the counter notification; YouTube says you can submit a new one containing the required information.
- If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated.
- If the claimant does not provide that evidence within the period, YouTube may reinstate the content unless you deleted it. Reinstatement is not guaranteed in all circumstances.
YouTube says it may remove content again if it receives evidence of legal action after the deadline or after reinstatement. Strike status may also be reassessed after a court decision. The counter-notification process and relevant rights can depend on the facts and jurisdiction; YouTube permits an authorized representative to submit one for a creator. Read YouTube’s instructions carefully, and consider legal advice if you are unsure what statements you can make.

Can you still act before a scheduled removal?
In some cases, YouTube issues a scheduled removal request. Where that process applies, the uploader may have seven days before removal becomes effective to take action, such as seeking a retraction or canceling an appeal in the relevant circumstance. This window is different from the later counter-notification process. Follow the deadline and options stated in the notice; once removal is effective and the strike is applied, use the routes available for an active strike. YouTube describes the timing in its copyright strike guidance.
Can the claimant retract the takedown?
You can contact the claimant and ask them to retract the copyright removal request. YouTube identifies retraction as a way to resolve a strike, but it is the claimant’s choice whether to agree. Use the contact details associated with the removal notice, explain clearly what you are requesting, and keep records of relevant correspondence. Do not assume that a request for retraction pauses another deadline shown by YouTube.

What happens if my counter notification is rejected?
Check YouTube’s stated reason. If YouTube rejected it because required information was missing, its guidance says you can submit a new counter notification containing the legally required information. A corrected submission is not a guarantee of reinstatement: if YouTube forwards a valid notice, the claimant can still provide evidence of legal action within the applicable 10 US business days. If you are uncertain whether you can make the required statements, seek legal advice rather than guessing. YouTube explains the process in its counter-notification instructions.
When does a copyright strike expire?
YouTube says a strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active copyright strikes. Letting a strike expire clears the strike under those conditions; it does not restore the removed livestream. Three copyright strikes within 90 days make a channel subject to termination. Check YouTube’s current copyright strike information and your account status for the steps that apply to you.

What to check before choosing a route
- Is the notice a Content ID claim, a scheduled removal request, an effective takedown, or a counter-notification decision?
- What does YouTube Studio show about active strikes and deadlines?
- Do you have a factual basis to say the removal was mistaken or the material was misidentified, and can you make the required legal statements?
- Can you contact the claimant to request a voluntary retraction?
- Would legal advice help you assess the material, licensing, evidence, or applicable jurisdiction before you act?
