For a station that can run prerecorded programs or tracks, a looping YouTube playlist is the simpler choice. Choose YouTube Live when you need one shared, real-time broadcast or live interaction. The key distinction: playlist repeat can replay a catalog, but it does not create a continuous live broadcast; a live stream does, but needs an operating feed and has archive and interruption limits.
What each format gives your listeners

YouTube’s documentation does not establish which format has better uptime, discoverability, or listener growth. Those outcomes depend on the station and its setup; choose based on the experience you need, not an assumed reach advantage.
When a playlist is the better fit
Use a playlist when your station is a rotation of existing programs or tracks and listeners do not need a shared live event. YouTube provides a control to loop an entire playlist on computer, mobile, TV, and game-console apps. The operator or listener must enable repeat in the relevant player; do not assume all listeners’ devices have identical settings. See YouTube’s playlist-loop instructions.

- Create a playlist and put its videos in the intended order.
- Open the playlist in the device or player where it will run.
- Turn on the playlist repeat control in that player. Confirm that the playlist, rather than only an individual video, is set to repeat.
- Check playback on the actual device and account that will be used. Repeat does not keep a sleeping, closed, or disconnected device playing.
Autoplay is different: it chooses a related next video rather than reliably following a station’s planned rotation. It can stop after inactivity, and YouTube may present a continue-watching prompt. When YouTube Live is the better fit
Choose Live if you want viewers to share one broadcast in real time, including interaction that matters while the program is happening. Live is not simply a playlist with a different label: a supported method must send a functioning feed to YouTube.
Live-stream prerequisites and setup
YouTube’s current live-start guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; it also says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods. Availability of some advanced controls depends on the method or channel. - Choose a supported streaming method and prepare a stable feed.
- For an encoder workflow, obtain the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s live controls and enter them in the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the feed and verify the live preview and status in YouTube before treating the station as on air.
- Monitor the feed and keep a separate local recording if you need a dependable archive.
Do not treat one 24/7 event as a complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Very long streams can also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind, and viewers cannot seek to before the broadcast began. A 24-hour event therefore is not a safe substitute for keeping a local recording. See archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Copyright and playlist-policy checks
For a music station, rights need to cover the actual use and territory, including the live stream and any archived copy. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights and applicable permissions. This is not a determination of what a particular license permits in a given territory; consult the rights holder or a qualified adviser where needed. Read the YouTube livestream terms.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If matching content remains, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate the broadcast. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption: YouTube advises creators with licensed third-party content to ask the owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. For playlists, use accurate titles and descriptions. YouTube’s playlist policy prohibits misleading titles or descriptions and playlists that violate Community Guidelines. See the playlist policy.
