A YouTube channel can have up to 10 active streams, and a single stream key can have up to 3 active streams. Both caps apply at once: reaching either limit prevents another stream from starting. YouTube does not specify whether every OBS-plus-backup configuration counts as one or more active streams, so test the exact handoff in Live Control Room rather than assuming a backup encoder is exempt.
How YouTube’s active-stream limits work
YouTube’s published limit is 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are simultaneous caps, not a count of encoders installed or configured. If the channel has reached its cap, or the key has reached its cap, another stream cannot start. YouTube’s live streaming limits do not explain how every primary-and-backup ingestion arrangement is counted.
A backup encoder is a continuity measure, not a documented way around either cap. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover, but that guidance does not establish whether a particular arrangement transmitting from both encoders at once is treated as one active stream or more. The practical answer depends on your encoder setup and the stream’s behavior in YouTube.
Test OBS-to-backup failover before the event
Do not rely on a configured backup alone. YouTube’s guidance is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup. Run this test with the actual encoders, stream key, network, and event configuration you intend to use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Prepare both encoders. Confirm that each is pointed at the intended YouTube event and uses the correct ingestion details. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders; the specific setup and switching behavior depend on the products and configuration you choose.
- Check the stream in Live Control Room. Start the encoders in a test or scheduled-event workflow, preview the incoming stream, and confirm the viewer page is accessible. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before the event and starting them at least 15 minutes before it.
- Trigger the handoff. Stop OBS, or disconnect the primary encoder’s Ethernet cable, as appropriate for your test. Watch the player and verify that it rolls over to the backup. A second encoder being ready is not proof that viewers will see a successful switch.
- Check the result and dependencies. Confirm audio and video on the backup feed and note any interruption. If both encoders share a computer, power source, or network, a failure of that shared component may still take both paths offline.
- Check local recordings. YouTube’s preparation guidance also recommends verifying local archive files, so a stream interruption does not leave you without a recording of the event.
For a scheduled event, YouTube’s encoder preparation and failover guidance is in its live streaming tips.
Budget enough upload bandwidth for both feeds
YouTube recommends upload capacity for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, with an additional 20% headroom. In formula form: (primary bitrate + backup bitrate) × 1.20. For example, if the two configured feeds together require 10 Mbps, the recommendation implies at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity. That is a planning calculation, not a guarantee that a shared or unstable connection will keep either feed online.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Measure sustainable upload capacity on the connection you will actually use, and account for other traffic on it. If the primary and backup use the same internet connection, losing that connection can interrupt both; adding an encoder does not itself create network redundancy.
Keep encoder settings compatible
Match the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and protocol to what the event and encoders support. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate ranges vary by resolution and frame rate, so choose the applicable range in YouTube’s encoding settings guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for general ingestion. OBS is also named among encoders that support YouTube HLS output; if using HLS for backup ingestion, follow YouTube’s HLS instructions and copy the Backup server URL when needed. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP, so protocol choice can affect delay. The documentation does not establish that every OBS version automatically monitors another encoder or switches to it; validate the exact workflow you plan to use. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions.
Use stream keys carefully
You enter a stream key in the encoder. YouTube allows custom stream keys for reuse and provides a way to reset a key if it is compromised. Keep the key private, and check that each encoder is aimed at the intended event and ingestion details. Reusing a key does not remove the per-key cap of three active streams.

When a cloud relay is relevant
YouTube describes cloud encoder services as a way to distribute one high-quality feed to multiple channels, resolutions, or platforms. That is a distribution use case; YouTube’s documentation does not say a relay changes the active-stream caps. Confirm the service’s destination limits, failover behavior, and plan terms before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing an encoder at home: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts.
