To watch an ordinary YouTube Live stream on a TV, first try the YouTube app on the TV or streaming device. You can also use Cast from the YouTube mobile app when the TV or device and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network, but not every live stream is supported by every casting destination. If wireless playback fails, try the TV app or connect a laptop to the TV with HDMI.

Choose a way to watch

Situation Try this What to check
YouTube is installed on the TV or streaming device Open the TV app and find the stream Make sure the app is installed and working
You want to control playback from a phone or tablet Use Cast in the YouTube mobile app Normally, both devices need the same Wi-Fi; the stream and destination must support playback
Your phone and TV are on different networks Link the phone or tablet with a TV code The TV app or device must offer the code workflow; computers cannot use it
You are watching from a computer Use YouTube in a computer browser and select Cast Connect the computer and TV/device to the same Wi-Fi
You have an Apple device and a compatible destination Try AirPlay The destination and video app must support AirPlay
Wireless playback does not work Play from the TV app or connect a laptop by HDMI Check that the laptop and TV have usable ports and a suitable cable

This guide is about ordinary YouTube Live streams, not YouTube TV, which is a separate live television service with its own device and casting instructions.

Check the YouTube app on your TV first

YouTube says its app is available on most smart TVs, game consoles and streaming devices. If it is installed, opening the stream directly on the TV avoids relying on phone-to-TV discovery. You can also use the mobile app as a companion or remote where supported. YouTube Help explains how to get the YouTube app on a smart TV or game console.

  1. Open YouTube on the TV or streaming device.
  2. Find the channel or live stream and select it.
  3. If you want to control playback from a phone or tablet, open YouTube there as well and use the available linking or Cast options.

Cast from the YouTube app on a phone or tablet

The standard mobile Cast flow generally requires the phone or tablet and the TV or streaming device to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Both devices should have YouTube available. Casting availability can depend on the destination and the stream, so use the TV app or HDMI as alternatives if playback is refused. YouTube Help provides the mobile Cast instructions.

Android

  1. Connect the Android device and TV or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open YouTube on the TV or streaming device.
  3. Open YouTube on the phone or tablet and select the live stream.
  4. Tap Cast and choose the destination.
  5. If the destination does not appear, check app permissions for local-network device discovery. On Android 17, allow the relevant YouTube app to discover devices on the local network.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Connect the iPhone or iPad and TV or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open YouTube on both devices, select the stream on the mobile device, then tap Cast and choose the destination.
  3. On iOS 14 or later, allow YouTube to access the Local Network. If you use more than one YouTube app, check permission for each app separately.

Link a phone or tablet with a TV code

A TV code can link a phone or tablet with the YouTube app on a TV when the devices are not on the same Wi-Fi. The code option depends on the TV app or streaming device. YouTube says this method is not available from computers.

  1. Open YouTube on the TV or streaming device.
  2. Go to Settings and choose Add a device to display the TV code.
  3. In the YouTube app on your phone or tablet, tap Cast, then Add a device.
  4. Enter the code shown on the TV and complete the linking steps.
  5. Select the linked TV or device to play the stream.

Cast from a computer browser

YouTube’s computer instructions use YouTube on the TV and youtube.com in a computer browser. Connect both to the same Wi-Fi network, then use the Cast option in the YouTube player. Some features may not be available when casting from a browser. Mobile browsers do not provide the normal YouTube Cast workflow.

  1. Connect the computer and TV or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open YouTube on the TV or device.
  3. On the computer, visit youtube.com and open the stream.
  4. Use the player’s menu, select Cast, and choose the destination.

Use AirPlay from an Apple device

AirPlay is a separate wireless option for an iPhone or iPad and a compatible destination, such as Apple TV, an AirPlay-compatible smart TV or a Mac. Apple notes that some video apps may not support AirPlay, so it is not a guarantee that every live stream will play. Automatic and suggested AirPlay connections require the devices to be on the same Wi-Fi. See Apple’s AirPlay instructions.

  1. Connect the Apple device and AirPlay destination to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open the stream and use the AirPlay control available in the app or device controls.
  3. Select the destination. If the stream or app does not support AirPlay, use the TV’s YouTube app or HDMI instead.

Why a YouTube Live stream may not cast

Do not assume every live stream can be sent to every Cast-enabled TV. Google Cast troubleshooting lists live content among the types of content that will not work in the restriction it describes. YouTube’s general casting instructions do not promise universal live-stream compatibility. If a stream refuses to play, use the YouTube app directly on the TV or try a laptop connected to the TV with HDMI. Google Cast Help describes casting restrictions; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes HDMI as an alternative.

Troubleshooting

The TV or streaming device is missing from the Cast list

  • Check that the phone or computer and TV/device are on the same Wi-Fi network for the standard Cast flow.
  • On iOS 14 or later, allow YouTube Local Network access. On Android 17, allow the relevant app to discover devices on the local network.
  • Update YouTube and restart the devices if discovery still fails.

The stream refuses to play

  • Try opening the stream directly in the YouTube app on the TV.
  • Try connecting a laptop to the TV with HDMI.
  • Check whether the destination or content is subject to a casting restriction.

Playback stops or is behind the live event

  • Restart the playback device and check for system or app updates.
  • Check the network connection. YouTube notes that congestion and other factors can delay live programming, even on a good network.

The TV code is unavailable

  • Confirm that YouTube is installed and open on the TV or streaming device.
  • Look in the TV app’s Settings for Add a device.
  • Use the code workflow from a phone or tablet, not a computer.

YouTube Kids profile causes an error

YouTube says a YouTube Kids profile in the TV app can cause casting errors. If that applies, switch to another profile and try again.

FAQ

How do I cast YouTube Live to my TV?

Open YouTube on the TV or streaming device, then open YouTube on your phone or tablet, select the stream, tap Cast and choose the destination. The standard flow normally requires both devices to use the same Wi-Fi, and the stream must be compatible with casting.

Some live content may be restricted from playback on Cast-enabled TVs, and not every destination supports every stream. Try the YouTube app directly on the TV or connect a laptop to the TV with HDMI.

How can I watch YouTube on my TV without the same Wi-Fi?

If the TV or streaming device offers YouTube’s TV-code option, link it using the YouTube app on a phone or tablet. YouTube does not support this code workflow from computers.
