Use two independent checks: monitor FFmpeg’s process and machine-readable progress locally, then check whether YouTube is receiving the stream and reporting health issues. Alert when either layer shows a problem, and include timestamps plus the specific status or error details. FFmpeg can be running while YouTube receives an unhealthy or incomplete stream.
Why one health check is not enough
A process monitor can tell you whether FFmpeg is running and producing progress updates. It cannot establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. YouTube exposes its own receive-side stream status and health information through the Live Streaming API, and shows health indicators and error messages in Live Control Room.
Treat these as separate signals. YouTube’s active state means it is receiving data; it does not prove that every viewer can play the broadcast without buffering or other playback problems. For audience playback assurance, a separate viewer-side check may be useful, but it is not a substitute for the two checks below.

FFmpeg’s -progress option sends program-friendly progress information to a URL. Its documentation demonstrates writing to standard output with -progress pipe:1. Output is made of key=value lines; each complete block ends with a progress key whose value is continue or end. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

For example, add these options to your existing FFmpeg command:
-stats_period 1 -progress pipe:1
This example asks FFmpeg to emit progress on standard output at a one-second statistics period. Keep your existing input, encoding, and YouTube output options; this is not a complete streaming command. FFmpeg documents 0.5 seconds as the default -stats_period value. That is an output cadence, not a recommended outage timeout.

What the watchdog should record
- Whether the FFmpeg process is running, along with its exit time and exit status.
- When the last complete progress block arrived.
- The contents or parsed fields of the latest block, including its terminal
progressvalue.
Track process exit and missing progress as distinct failures. A process may exit, or it may remain present while progress output has stopped. Set the stale-progress interval for your input and output behavior and the configured update cadence; neither FFmpeg nor YouTube specifies one universal timeout. Leave enough tolerance for expected delays rather than paging on every missed update.
2. Check YouTube’s receive-side status and health
For automated monitoring, inspect the YouTube Live Streaming API’s liveStream.status.streamStatus and liveStream.status.healthStatus fields. The liveStream resource documentation describes the feed sent to YouTube and its status and health information.

Interpret the status fields separately
| Field or value | What it tells you | Monitoring implication |
|---|---|---|
streamStatus: active |
YouTube is receiving data. | It is a receive-state signal, not proof that the feed is free of health issues or that viewers can play it smoothly. |
streamStatus: created, ready, inactive, or error |
Other documented stream states. | Decide which states are expected for your broadcast phase; for example, a not-yet-started stream need not be treated like an unexpected failure during a scheduled live event. |
healthStatus: good |
No configuration issues at warning severity or worse. | Use with stream status and broadcast context rather than as the only check. |
healthStatus: ok |
No issues at error severity. | This does not mean there are no lesser-severity issues. |
healthStatus: bad |
YouTube reports a bad health condition. | Capture the associated issue details and investigate the reported problem. |
healthStatus: noData |
YouTube’s live-streaming backend has no health-status information. | Do not treat one noData observation alone as proof that the stream is down; repeat the check and consider the current broadcast context. |
The health object can include a last-update time and configuration issues. Preserve those details in your monitoring record. API access and polling require an implementation of your own; authorization, quota, polling cadence, and alert delivery depend on that implementation.
3. Include actionable details in alerts
An alert should help an operator distinguish a local encoder problem from a YouTube ingestion or configuration issue. Include the check that failed and the latest evidence available, rather than sending only “stream down.”

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
- Timestamp of the observation, preferably with a consistent time zone or UTC notation.
- Failure layer: FFmpeg process exit, stale FFmpeg progress, YouTube stream state, or YouTube health issue.
- For a process exit, the exit time and status; for stalled progress, the last complete progress-block time.
- For YouTube, the latest stream status, health status, health update time, and issue reason or description when available.
YouTube’s Live Control Room metrics guidance explains that you can check stream health and analytics while streaming. Its live-stream error guidance describes timestamped messages shown by the Health Indicator. The API issue reference includes examples such as missing audio or video, unsupported video codecs, mismatched primary and backup stream settings, and video ingestion starvation. Preserve the actual message and timestamp when available; do not assume every alert has the same cause.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Choose alert logic for your broadcast
Define expected states for the phase of your broadcast, then alert on a condition that violates those expectations. A practical starting design is to alert on an FFmpeg exit, progress that has gone stale, or an unexpected YouTube status or health condition. Add a short confirmation window or deduplication if transient observations would otherwise generate repeated pages. These are implementation choices, not thresholds prescribed by FFmpeg or YouTube.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Do not restart FFmpeg solely because a single API observation is noData. Repeat the check and compare it with the process/progress signal and the broadcast’s current phase. If YouTube reports a specific issue, investigate that message before deciding that an encoder restart is appropriate.
Decide where the monitor runs
- On the encoder host: straightforward to connect to FFmpeg’s output, but a host failure can take out both the encoder and the monitor.
- On a separate host: can observe failures that disable the encoder machine, but adds hosting and maintenance complexity.
- Manual dashboard review: Live Control Room is useful for an operator watching stream health and messages, but it is not the same as an automated alert.
- API-based monitoring: suitable for automation when you implement API access and polling; choose a cadence that balances alert delay with the needs and limits of your implementation.
No single placement or polling interval fits every stream. The trade-off is alert latency and operational complexity versus the risk that the monitor shares the encoder’s failure domain.
5. Test the entire alert path
- Start a test stream and confirm that FFmpeg remains running and the watchdog receives complete progress blocks.
- Confirm that your monitor can read the intended YouTube status and health information, or that an operator can see the stream health in Live Control Room.
- Verify that a test notification reaches the alert destination and contains useful timestamps and status details.
- Test the conditions you can safely simulate, such as a stopped encoder, and confirm that the monitor distinguishes process exit from stale progress.
- Before an event, test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then review YouTube’s health indicators and messages. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends testing with content similar to the actual event and monitoring health during the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, rather than to operate your own FFmpeg encoder and watchdog, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream plays at the quality you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos and YouTube streaming, not a camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
