A black gap between clips in a YouTube Live stream can come from how FFmpeg joins their timestamps, inaccurate duration metadata, incompatible streams, or a problem later in the encoding or YouTube ingest path. First inspect the source files and the outgoing stream; the symptom alone does not identify the cause. If the clips are compatible and their timing is sound, stream copy may work. Otherwise, correct the demonstrated timing issue or normalize the clips with a decode-and-re-encode workflow.
Why a black gap can appear between playlist videos
With the FFmpeg concat demuxer, timestamps are adjusted so the first file starts at zero and each later file starts where FFmpeg calculates the previous file ends. The FFmpeg project warns that this adjustment is global and can create gaps when streams do not have exactly the same length. Inaccurate duration metadata can also misplace later timestamps and cause artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Other possibilities include black frames already present at a clip boundary, a mismatch introduced during encoding, or a problem in YouTube ingest or playback. A black picture by itself cannot distinguish among these causes. There is no established prevalence figure showing which cause is most common.
Diagnose the boundary before changing the command
1. Probe every playlist file
Run ffprobe on each file listed in the concat input and compare the results. Check the number and types of streams, codecs, time bases, reported duration, frame rate, dimensions, and audio properties. The concat demuxer specifically requires compatible stream layouts, codecs, and time bases; differences in the other properties can also mean the clips need a common output format.

For example, use this inspection command on each file, replacing the path with the actual filename:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format "clip1.mp4"Compare the reported durations with actual playback, especially near the end of each clip. A truncated file or duration inferred inaccurately from bitrate may not have a trustworthy duration. Keep the probe output so you can compare files rather than relying on a single clip.

2. Verify the concat list and its duration assumptions
Check that the concat file has the intended order and correct paths. If its entries use duration directives, compare those values with the actual media duration and the observed playback. The concat demuxer supports a per-file duration directive to override stored duration when inaccurate metadata has been identified. Do not add guessed durations: establish the mismatch first.

Stream copy copies encoded packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding. It can avoid a re-encode, but it does not normalize incompatible streams or repair incorrect duration metadata. Use it only when the inputs meet the concat requirements and their timing is correct. The FFmpeg documentation on stream copy explains what copying does and does not do; the FFmpeg FAQ describes the concat demuxer as useful when avoiding re-encoding where file-level concatenation is not supported by the media format.

If the probes show incompatible streams, or continuity requires a common format, consider decoding, filtering or otherwise normalizing, then re-encoding with deliberate audio and video handling. The appropriate filters and settings depend on the actual files; there is no safe universal command for unknown media properties.
4. Inspect FFmpeg output around the transition
Retain the exact command and logs from a run that reproduces the gap. Look around the boundary for timestamp discontinuities, duration warnings, dropped or duplicated frames, and differences between audio and video streams. If possible, inspect the outgoing encoded stream at the same point. This helps separate a source-file gap from a concat or encode artifact.

5. Check YouTube Live stream health
YouTube provides a stream-health status through its Live Streaming API; use it as a separate diagnostic layer to check whether an issue is present at ingest rather than assuming FFmpeg is the only possible source. The API’s LiveStreams resource documents stream health. If you ingest via HLS, consult Google’s YouTube HLS ingestion guidance for that protocol.
Check encoder settings after fixing the media path
Use YouTube’s current guidance for the output resolution, frame rate, and ingest protocol you use. Its general encoder settings recommend constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and say not to exceed four seconds. These are encoder recommendations, not a diagnosis of playlist gaps. Troubleshooting by symptom
