If your YouTube live stream is dropping frames, first check which OBS counter is rising. Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection between your computer and YouTube or a bitrate your upload cannot sustain. Frames missed due to rendering lag and Skipped frames due to encoding lag point to local system workload. The fix depends on which one you see.

Identify which frames are being lost

In OBS, open View > Stats while streaming and watch the three counters. OBS Project explains that network drops occur when the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; significant drops can disconnect the stream. Rendering and encoding lag are different problems, even though all three can make the output look choppy. See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide and OBS encoding performance guide.

OBS counter that rises Likely failure location First thing to check
Dropped Frames (Network) Network path from your computer to the YouTube ingest server, or bitrate exceeding sustainable upload capacity Outbound upload stability, shared network use, and configured bitrate
Frames missed due to rendering lag OBS cannot render or composite frames quickly enough GPU workload, scene complexity, and competing applications
Skipped frames due to encoding lag The encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough Encoder errors, CPU/system load, and encoding workload

Do not lower the bitrate just because the stream looks choppy: if the rendering or encoding counter is rising, a network adjustment may not address the cause.

Fix network-dropped frames

1. Check real upload capacity and competing traffic

Test upload performance, not just download speed. YouTube notes that other people and devices sharing a connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Test under conditions close to the real broadcast, and account for any backup stream using the same connection.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube Help’s Streaming tips says the total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That reserve matters because a speed-test result is not a guarantee that the same upload rate will remain available throughout a live event.

2. Compare your output bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations

Check the current YouTube live encoder settings table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s recommendations are configuration guidance, not proof that your particular connection can sustain that rate. The page’s published English-US H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; the page can vary by locale or be updated, so use its live table for the settings you choose.

YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Match the stream settings to both the platform’s current guidance and the capacity of your actual connection.

3. Reduce the demand if upload cannot keep up

If the configured bitrate is too high for sustainable upload, lower it. If that is not enough, lower the output resolution or frame rate as well. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance recommends lowering resolution when bandwidth cannot support the selected resolution’s bitrate. The trade-off is reduced delivered detail or motion smoothness.

OBS can adjust bitrate dynamically when the connection is congested. This may help avoid drops, but OBS warns that it reduces stream quality and does not repair the underlying connection problem.

4. Investigate interference if drops persist

Follow the controlled checks in the OBS network troubleshooting guide. VPN or security software can interfere with a stream connection, but changing such settings is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix. Change one relevant setting at a time and compare the network counter. If OBS’s steps do not resolve the issue, OBS advises contacting your ISP.

Fix rendering or encoding lag

When rendering lag rises

OBS must composite and render each scene; GPU-heavy games or applications can leave too few resources for OBS. Reduce the competing workload: lower game graphics or frame rate, close applications you know are GPU-heavy, or simplify scenes and output demands. Check the rendering counter again after each change.

When encoding lag rises

Inspect encoder errors and system load. YouTube recommends checking CPU load and the local archive; if the archive is choppy too, the problem is not limited to the connection delivering the stream. Follow the OBS encoding performance troubleshooting guide to assess encoding workload and available resources.

On Windows, OBS suggests running the program as administrator as a quick diagnostic step for some GPU-overload cases. It is not a universal fix. Confirm first that a local rendering or encoding counter is increasing before considering hardware replacement.

Verify the fix before the event

  1. Make one relevant change at a time. Keep track of which counter you are trying to improve so you can tell whether that change helped.
  2. Run a representative test. Include movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast; a static screen may not reveal the same workload.
  3. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends monitoring these during testing and the event.
  4. Watch the OBS Stats counters during the test. Confirm that the original counter has stopped rising and that the output looks healthy before relying on the stream.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations and health guidance are available in its live streaming settings and tips.

Common dropped-frame symptoms and next steps

  • Only network drops rise: investigate upload stability, competing traffic, bitrate, and connection interference.
  • Rendering lag rises while network drops do not: reduce GPU workload or scene complexity.
  • Encoding lag rises and the local archive is choppy: inspect encoder errors and system load before changing network settings.
  • Lowering bitrate helps but quality falls: the connection may not sustain the original output; consider a lower resolution or frame rate, and continue investigating the network bottleneck.
  • The counters stay clear but viewers report problems: check YouTube’s stream-health messages and preview during a representative test; the available counters alone may not identify every viewer-side or platform-side issue.

Or let it run in the cloud
