Repeated disconnects do not, by themselves, prove that Linux or YouTube is at fault. Start by checking OBS’s network-dropped frames and encoder statistics at the moment of failure, then compare them with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Those clues help distinguish an unstable outbound connection from an encoder, CPU, or source problem.

Capture what happens when the stream drops

  1. In OBS, open View → Stats. Watch network-dropped frames, render lag, and encoder lag while streaming.
  2. Write down the exact time of each disconnect and whether OBS reconnects. Save the OBS log after reproducing the problem.
  3. Open YouTube Live Control Room and note any stream-health messages that appear at the same time.

Compare the indicators rather than treating every freeze as a network failure. OBS’s connection guide describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. That is OBS’s interpretation of those symptoms; it does not identify which part of the path is failing. In OBS’s terminology, the “server” means the streaming service, such as YouTube, not an OBS server. OBS also says it is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio itself to cause dropped frames. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the indicators and common network variables.

Use the indicators to narrow down the cause

Network-dropped frames rise before the disconnect

This points toward the outbound connection or route to YouTube’s ingest service. OBS says dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; if enough frames are lost, the encoder may disconnect. The counters do not, on their own, tell you whether the cause is Wi-Fi, network software, router or modem connectivity, a driver, the ISP, or the route to the ingest service.

Encoder lag, render lag, or CPU trouble appears

Investigate the encoder and the computer’s workload separately from the network. Check whether the encoder preview is already degraded and look for encoder errors or high CPU load. YouTube recommends checking that the encoder software is current and inspecting the stream in the encoder. If local output is unhealthy, address that problem before concluding that the connection is responsible.

OBS counters and YouTube health messages do not match

Keep both records and their timestamps. A general internet speed test cannot establish that the outbound route to the live ingest server remains stable during a continuous upload. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy, YouTube advises testing outbound connectivity; if the network appears stable but YouTube reports an encoder problem, check or update the encoder and consider testing another encoder. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Test the network path one variable at a time

  1. If you are on Wi-Fi, test over Ethernet. OBS recommends wired networking. Connecting directly to the router for a controlled test can eliminate Wi-Fi as a variable, though it is not a guaranteed fix. Use a suitable Ethernet cable if needed.
  2. Temporarily test without a VPN. If disconnects stop, the VPN or the route it uses may be involved. Restore it after the test if you need it; change only this one factor at a time.
  3. Review network-affecting software. Check firewall and security tools, plus vendor utilities that claim to boost networking or prioritize traffic. Test changes cautiously, one at a time, and restore protections or settings after each test.
  4. Check drivers and connectivity hardware. Review relevant network drivers and whether the router or modem shows connectivity problems. Do not assume the router or modem needs replacement unless testing points to it.
  5. Compare each test with OBS and YouTube evidence. Record whether network-dropped frames change, whether the disconnect recurs, and what Live Control Room reports.

OBS’s guide also describes “Network Optimizations” and “TCP pacing,” but those controls are Windows-only, so they are not Linux troubleshooting steps. Check the OBS guide for its platform-specific notes.

Check whether the configured stream quality fits the connection

Choose a quality level that matches the upload capacity you can sustain, not just a favorable speed-test result. YouTube’s guidance is to test the upload bitrate and to include audio and movement similar to the real stream. A quiet, static test scene may not represent a stream with motion and sound. Do not raise or lower bitrate by guesswork: the right setting depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder, and stable upload results.
