For a conventional YouTube live stream, use a horizontal 16:9 frame; 1920×1080 (1080p) and 1280×720 (720p) are common HD sizes. Choose 9:16 for a mobile-first vertical stream, or configure YouTube’s dual-format option before going live if you want both orientations. Aspect ratio is the frame’s shape; resolution is its pixel dimensions, so decide them separately.
Choose the format for the way viewers will watch
| Format | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal 16:9 | Conventional desktop, TV, and landscape viewing | YouTube identifies 16:9 as its standard desktop aspect ratio. Common HD dimensions are 1920×1080 and 1280×720. |
| Vertical 9:16 | Mobile-first live viewing and potential Shorts-feed discovery | Check framing. A vertical version derived from horizontal video may crop off content at the sides; discovery and features depend on eligibility. |
| Dual horizontal and vertical | Creators who want to serve landscape and mobile-oriented viewers | Configure it before the stream starts and preview both compositions. YouTube says Shorts-feed viewers see the vertical version while other viewers see the horizontal version. |
YouTube’s player adapts to different aspect ratios, but 16:9 remains the standard desktop shape. The right choice depends on the content: a presentation with side-by-side material may need landscape framing, while a subject composed for a phone can suit vertical. YouTube documents the layouts and behavior in its live-stream setup guidance.
Choose resolution independently of aspect ratio
Resolution describes how many pixels make up the frame. If width and height keep the same proportion, changing pixel dimensions does not change the aspect ratio: 1920×1080 and 1280×720 are both 16:9.

YouTube lists these standard 16:9 frame dimensions: 7680×4320 (4320p), 3840×2160 (2160p), 2560×1440 (1440p), 1920×1080 (1080p), 1280×720 (720p), 854×480 (480p), 640×360 (360p), and 426×240 (240p). The largest size is not automatically the best choice. Match resolution to your production, encoder, and available upload capacity; 1080p and 720p are common HD starting points. See YouTube’s video resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

Set bitrate and encoder settings for the chosen resolution
Aspect ratio does not determine bitrate. YouTube’s published recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, and are ingest settings rather than a guarantee of viewers’ playback quality. For H.264, YouTube recommends:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
Recommendations for AV1 and H.265 (HEVC) differ. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions if you use either codec or a different output. YouTube’s encoder guidance also specifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, square pixels, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Resolution and frame rate are automatically detected by default.
Use your measured upload capacity, not download speed, when deciding whether your connection can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Its streaming tips also advise testing the stream and monitoring its health.

Set up a vertical stream or dual format
Vertical-only stream
Build the composition for a tall 9:16 frame rather than assuming a horizontal layout will fit a phone. Vertical live streams offer a full-screen mobile experience and may be discoverable in the Shorts feed. Eligibility affects availability of discovery and fan-funding features; a vertical stream does not automatically qualify for every feature.
Dual format in YouTube Live Control Room
- Before going live, configure dual streaming in Live Control Room. YouTube can create horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together; the vertical output cannot be added after the stream has started.
- Inspect the vertical preview. The default is a center crop of the horizontal stream. YouTube also lists fit-to-phone-width and stacked layouts, and allows adjustment of zoom and position.
- Keep essential people, text, and graphics within the visible vertical area. Content near the sides of the horizontal frame may be cropped out in the default center-crop layout.
- Check both previews and confirm the intended orientation before starting the stream.
Dual format from a third-party encoder
This is a separate workflow from using Live Control Room’s built-in dual format. YouTube’s instructions specify RTMP(S), selecting the encoder option, using a second stream key for the vertical output, and sending each matching format to its corresponding key. Verify that the horizontal output goes to the horizontal key and the vertical output to the vertical key before starting.
Preflight checklist
- Decide whether your primary composition is horizontal, vertical, or both.
- If using dual format, inspect the vertical crop or layout and reposition anything essential that could be cut off.
- For an encoder workflow with two outputs, match each orientation to the correct stream key.
- Leave YouTube’s automatic resolution and frame-rate detection on unless you have a reason to set them manually.
- Check measured upload bandwidth and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends.
- Test representative motion and audio, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health during the event.
Troubleshoot common sizing and stream problems
The image looks stretched or does not fill the player
Check the source frame’s aspect ratio and pixel dimensions in the encoder. A 16:9 composition should use a matching 16:9 output, such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720; do not confuse a resolution change with an aspect-ratio change. YouTube’s player adapts to different shapes, so the player itself may not fill every screen in the same way.

Important content disappears in the vertical version
The default dual-format vertical output is a center crop. Preview it before going live, move essential material into the visible area, or choose another available layout such as fit to phone width or stacked.

Check the actual outbound bandwidth and whether the configured bitrate leaves the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. If it does not, reduce the output bitrate or resolution, then test again. Confirm the encoder uses a supported codec and the stream remains within YouTube’s published settings.
The vertical version is missing
Dual format must be configured before the stream begins. If sending outputs from a third-party encoder, check that the vertical stream is being sent to its separate vertical stream key using the encoder workflow.

The stream does not appear in the expected mobile discovery or feature surface
Vertical format makes a stream eligible for certain mobile experiences, but discovery and fan-funding features are subject to YouTube’s feature eligibility. Do not treat the aspect ratio alone as a guarantee of placement or feature access.
