You must be at least 16 to live stream on YouTube, and your channel must be verified with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. You can set your stream to viewers over 18 in YouTube Studio, but YouTube can also apply its own age restriction. These are separate controls, and a creator-set gate does not override YouTube’s review.
YouTube Live streaming age rules
YouTube’s minimum age to live stream is 16. If a stream does not meet that requirement, YouTube may take it down and temporarily remove the account’s access to live streaming. YouTube also requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
A person under 16 may participate in a live stream from an adult-owned account only if the adult is visibly present and participates. An adult can be given editor, manager, or owner access to the younger creator’s channel and start the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube warns that streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult may have live chat disabled or lose access to live chat or other features temporarily.
Creator-set 18+ gate vs. YouTube-applied restriction
There are two different ways an age gate can be applied. The creator can choose an over-18 audience setting in Studio; YouTube can also restrict content it considers unsuitable for viewers under 18, whether or not it violates Community Guidelines. A self-imposed restriction does not prevent YouTube from making its own decision.

How to set your livestream to viewers over 18
- In YouTube Studio, start setting up your live stream.
- Enter the stream details and audience setting.
- Choose Age restriction (advanced).
- Select Yes, restrict my videos to viewers over 18.
This setting is your choice about the intended audience. You must still comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines, and YouTube may apply its own restriction.
What content can YouTube age-restrict?
YouTube’s examples include dangerous activities that minors could imitate, content aimed at adults that could be confused with family content, heavy profanity in titles, thumbnails, metadata, or content focused on profanity, disturbing imagery, nudity, and sexually suggestive material. These are examples, not a complete list. YouTube’s age-restriction policy applies to live streams as well as videos, descriptions, thumbnails, and other YouTube features.

What an age restriction means for viewers and revenue
Viewers under 18 and viewers who are signed out cannot watch age-restricted content. It may not play on most third-party websites; viewers may be directed to YouTube, where they must sign in and be over 18. Age-restricted content can carry ads, but monetization may be limited or absent depending on advertiser suitability.
What to do if YouTube restricts your stream
Check the notice in YouTube Studio. If you believe YouTube restricted the stream in error, use the appeal route provided in that notice. The dossier does not establish a standard review time or guarantee that an appeal will succeed.

YouTube may impose live-stream restrictions or strikes for policy violations. Do not try to evade an active live-streaming restriction by streaming from another channel; YouTube says this is not allowed.

Can viewers under 18 watch an age-restricted livestream?
No. Viewers under 18 and signed-out viewers cannot watch age-restricted content. It may also be unavailable on most third-party websites.
Does setting my stream to 18+ stop YouTube from restricting it?
No. The creator-set setting does not override YouTube’s own review. YouTube can apply an age restriction under its policy whether or not you have selected the over-18 setting.
Does an age restriction always mean my stream violated Community Guidelines?
No. YouTube may age-restrict content because it is not suitable for under-18 viewers even if it does not violate Community Guidelines. A separate policy violation can also lead to removal or live-stream access restrictions.
What should I do if I think an age restriction is a mistake?
Check the notice in YouTube Studio and use the appeal route provided there. YouTube’s guidance does not promise a particular review time or outcome.
