Neither ads nor channel memberships reliably earn more for every always-on YouTube channel. Ads can scale with eligible viewers, but YouTube does not guarantee an ad will run; memberships bring recurring payments from viewers who choose to pay for channel perks. Compare the two using your own YouTube Analytics and membership reports for the same dates—not a generic earnings estimate or advertiser CPM.

How live-stream ads and memberships earn money

Ads depend on delivery as well as audience

When monetization is enabled for a live stream, YouTube automatically turns on pre-roll and display ads. Mid-roll ads can be automatic or inserted manually. Automatic mid-roll frequency can be set to low, medium, or high; YouTube describes those options as corresponding to lower, medium, and higher earnings potential. For manual scheduling, YouTube lists intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. These are insertion opportunities, not promises that ads will appear.

YouTube’s ad systems decide which slots receive ads, and a live ad slot is not guaranteed to serve. Delivery and revenue can therefore vary with factors such as eligible viewers, geography, advertiser demand, and settings. YouTube also says ads are turned off when a live player is embedded on an external site with auto-start. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Memberships depend on paying members and the offer

Channel memberships let viewers make recurring monthly payments for creator-defined perks, such as members-only badges and emojis. Revenue depends on how many viewers join, the tier prices, how long members stay subscribed, and the costs and effort involved in delivering perks. Memberships can suit a small, passionate niche community, but that does not establish that they will beat ads for any particular channel. YouTube’s live monetization tips discuss memberships alongside other ways to earn.

What YouTube’s revenue shares do—and do not—tell you

YouTube’s partner earnings guidance states a 55% share of net Watch Page ad revenue for creators who have accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module. For creators who have accepted the Commerce Product Module, it states a 70% share of net revenue from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. These percentages apply to different revenue bases; the larger percentage does not prove that memberships earn more. YouTube also cautions: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.” See the partner earnings overview.

To earn fan-funding revenue, creators need the applicable Commerce Product Module and must enable the individual features they want to use. YouTube’s monetization feature settings explain how to choose them.

Compare creator revenue, not mismatched metrics

CPM is an advertiser-focused ad metric before YouTube’s share; it is not your take-home amount. RPM is creator-focused and represents reported revenue after revenue share, but YouTube says video RPM can combine ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. A blended RPM is therefore not a clean measure of live ad income. YouTube explains these measures in its ad revenue analytics guide.

How to find which earns more on your channel

  1. Choose one reporting period. Use the same start and end dates for live ad revenue and membership revenue. A longer period can help smooth day-to-day ad variation.
  2. Isolate live ad revenue. In YouTube Analytics, use the Live filter and available live-stream and live-replay breakdowns to separate live ad revenue from other revenue sources. Record the dates and whether the figure includes replays.
  3. Record membership receipts for those dates. Use your creator reporting and account for the relevant platform share and any applicable transaction or tax treatment. Do not compare gross member payments with net ad earnings.
  4. Add the operating context. Record total live hours and, where available, live unique viewers or watch time for the same period. Track membership churn and the cost of fulfilling perks separately; recurring revenue is not the same as profit.
  5. Compare totals, then normalize. First compare creator revenue from live ads with creator revenue from memberships. Then calculate each per live hour and, if the data are consistently available, per 1,000 live viewers or per 1,000 watch hours. Use the same audience measure and period for both.

This gives you a channel-specific comparison rather than a universal break-even point: YouTube publishes no general earnings table or threshold that establishes when live ads overtake memberships for always-on channels. The result can change with audience size and geography, ad inventory, stream schedule, membership offer, member retention, and perk workload.

How much weight to give YouTube’s automatic mid-roll figure

YouTube reported that channels with automatic live mid-roll ads enabled had, on average, over 20% higher in-stream ad revenue per hour than channels without that setting, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. This is YouTube’s aggregate comparison of automatic mid-roll use—not a comparison with memberships, not proof of a universal causal effect, and not a forecast for an individual channel. Treat it as platform-reported context, not a promised increase. The finding appears in YouTube’s live monetization guidance.

Balance revenue against viewing experience and workload

  • Ad interruptions: More frequent mid-roll opportunities may increase earnings potential, but the actual delivery is not guaranteed and interruptions can affect the viewing experience.
  • Perk commitments: Membership income recurs while members remain subscribed, but benefits need to be delivered and maintained. Include that workload and its costs when judging whether memberships are more valuable.
  • Changing conditions: Revisit the comparison as audience geography, ad demand, live hours, retention, or membership tiers change. A result from one period need not hold for another.
