For a standard SDR YouTube Live stream in OBS, use AMD AMF with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate matched to your output resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, then test and monitor stream health before relying on the setup.
Recommended OBS settings for AMD AMF on YouTube Live
This baseline is for a conventional SDR broadcast. In OBS, open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and configure the Streaming section. Exact encoder labels and available options can vary with OBS version, operating system, GPU, and driver. OBS supports AMD’s Advanced Media Framework on Windows and Linux, subject to compatible hardware. See OBS’s AMD settings guide and compatible-GPU information.
- Encoder: Select the AMD hardware encoder available in your OBS installation. For a typical SDR workflow, choose H.264 unless you have confirmed that your YouTube ingest workflow and hardware support another codec.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; examples are in the table below.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says keyframes should be two seconds apart and must not exceed four seconds.
- Output resolution and frame rate: Set these in Settings > Video to the format you intend to broadcast. Match the bitrate to that output, not merely to the resolution of your source footage.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the server URL provided in YouTube Studio for the stream.
YouTube’s general live guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. It supports live input over RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its video codecs; actual choices depend on your workflow and the options your software and hardware expose. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for current requirements.
Choose a YouTube H.264 bitrate by output format
These are YouTube-published recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not guarantees of picture quality or stable delivery. Higher frame rates and resolutions require more upload capacity. YouTube also provides minimums and recommendations for other formats; check its full table if your format is not shown here.

These figures are recommendations published by YouTube in its live encoder settings table, accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. They are not measurements of an AMD encoder. Your usable upload speed needs to sustain the chosen bitrate reliably, with capacity left for normal network variation and other household or office traffic. YouTube recommends checking connection speed and choosing a reliable quality. See YouTube’s bitrate guidance.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio and OBS
- Create or select the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Copy its stream key and server URL into OBS under Settings > Stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming.
- Select the AMD encoder: In OBS, open Settings > Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced if the Streaming controls are not visible, and select the AMD hardware encoder available on your system.
- Configure live rate control: Set CBR, enter the H.264 bitrate for the planned output, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Set the output format: In Settings > Video, choose the resolution and frame rate for the broadcast. Return to the bitrate table and confirm the recommendation corresponds to that exact combination.
- Run a representative test: Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast. Include audio and movement similar to the real stream; a static desktop test may not expose the same issues as fast motion or a busy scene.
- Check the result: During the test, watch YouTube’s stream health messages and OBS’s statistics for dropped frames or encoder overload. If delivery is unstable, reduce the bitrate or output demands to a level your connection and system can sustain, then test again.
YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” It also advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” See YouTube’s stream setup and health guidance.

Why CQP is not the live-stream bitrate setting
OBS’s published AMD values of CQP rate control, CQ 16–23, a 2-second keyframe interval, Quality preset, High profile, and Max B-frames 0 are documented as an Advanced Recording Settings Guide baseline. They are recording guidance, not YouTube’s live bitrate recipe. CQP/CQ targets recording quality without specifying a fixed bitrate; YouTube’s live ingest guidance calls for CBR and a bitrate appropriate to the live output. Do not copy the recording CQ range into the live rate-control field as if it were a bitrate recommendation. The OBS guide is available at OBS Project.
HDR is a separate setup
Do not apply the SDR H.264 baseline unchanged to HDR. YouTube’s OBS HDR instructions describe an HEVC workflow using a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space; YouTube recommends HLG in those instructions. Follow the HDR-specific settings and stream-key protocol requirements, and verify that your GPU, driver, and OBS build expose the necessary options. See YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions.

Troubleshoot common AMD AMF streaming problems
- YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate: The selected bitrate may exceed what the upload connection can reliably sustain, or other traffic may be consuming capacity. Check upload speed under realistic network use; lower bitrate or output resolution/frame rate and run another representative test.
- OBS shows dropped frames: This commonly points to network delivery trouble rather than an encoder-quality setting. Check connection stability and available upload capacity, reduce the bitrate if necessary, and compare OBS statistics with YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- OBS reports encoder overload: The GPU or encoder may be unable to keep up with the selected output workload. Try a lower output resolution or frame rate and test again; do not assume that a higher YouTube bitrate fixes an encoding bottleneck.
- The AMD encoder or an expected option is missing: OBS options depend on the installed build, operating system, compatible GPU, and driver. Confirm the system meets OBS’s AMD encoder compatibility guidance and update or repair the relevant software as appropriate. Do not assume every Radeon model exposes the same codec or controls.
- The stream connects but has no picture or audio: Check that OBS is using the intended scene and sources, and verify the correct stream key and server URL in Settings > Stream. Keep the key private; replace it in YouTube Studio if it may have been disclosed.
- Keyframe or ingest warnings appear: Recheck that the interval is 2 seconds and the selected codec and output are supported by the chosen YouTube workflow. For HDR, use YouTube’s separate HDR instructions rather than assuming SDR settings apply.
