For a typical H.264 tutorial, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 or 6 Mbps at 1080p60, with a 2-second keyframe interval. Test the complete playback path before the audience arrives.
What you need before setting up the stream
This workflow sends a video file through an encoder as a live broadcast. It is different from uploading the file as an ordinary YouTube video: viewers watch a live event, while the encoder supplies the prerecorded video.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube’s general setup guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- The finished tutorial file and an encoder that can play it as its video input.
- A stable internet connection able to sustain the encoder’s selected bitrate.
- Time to test the video, audio, stream connection, and YouTube preview before the scheduled start.
Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live.
- Create a stream, or open the Manage tab and schedule one. Scheduling lets you promote the event and gives viewers the option to set reminders; scheduled stream settings can be edited.
- Enter the event details: title, description, category or type, and audience details as applicable. Choose Public, Private, or Unlisted visibility according to who should be able to watch.
- Review the event settings before sharing the link. YouTube says tags have limited discovery value, except when they help with commonly misspelled content, so do not rely on tags to drive viewers.
YouTube’s current interface labels can change. Confirm the settings in Live Control Room before publishing or following screenshots.
Connect the encoder and protect the stream key
- In Live Control Room, open the event’s streaming settings and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In your encoder, select the YouTube or YouTube Live destination if available. Enter the URL and key in the matching fields.
- Load the prerecorded coding tutorial as the encoder’s video source and confirm that its audio track is selected.
- Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends this encrypted version of RTMP for stream ingestion; its encoder guidance also lists supported protocols and codecs. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Treat the stream key as a password. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in your encoder. See Manage live stream settings.

Choose video, bitrate, audio, and latency settings
Match the stream to the tutorial’s source format and the upload connection’s reliable capacity. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so sending a higher bitrate than the connection can sustain can undermine a stable broadcast. The following are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee of results for every encoder or network.
| Output target | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR) for H.264 in the listed RTMP/RTMPS settings.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Check that the tutorial’s narration and system audio are audible and correctly balanced in the preview.
- Latency: Choose it based on whether you will interact with viewers in real time. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering and is less important when you do not interact with the audience. For a mostly prerecorded tutorial, lower latency may offer little benefit.
Run a test with the same file, encoder settings, and network you intend to use for the event. Check for dropped frames, buffering, audio problems, and whether text in code editors is legible at the selected resolution.

Preview, start, and end the scheduled event
- Start the encoder early enough to send video to YouTube before the event begins.
- Wait for the incoming stream preview to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the correct tutorial is playing and inspect both picture and sound.
- When ready, click Go live for the scheduled event.
- Monitor the stream while it runs. When the event is finished, end it in YouTube and stop the encoder as appropriate.
YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend setting up the encoder in advance, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. Do not assume that a successful encoder connection means the audience sees the right file or hears its audio.
Set DVR and understand what happens to the replay
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live event. YouTube warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to its encoder setup guidance. If you need a dependable replay, check the resulting archive after the event rather than relying on a long broadcast’s DVR behavior. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance and encoder settings guidance.

Keep the tutorial and broadcast eligible for YouTube
Use material you have the right to stream, including code, music, screen captures, and any third-party media shown in the recording. A live format does not remove copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s current policies and the permissions attached to included material before broadcasting. Also check the audience setting and event visibility in the Live Control Room; neither should be left to assumption.
Optional: standalone hardware playback
YouTube’s hardware encoder list names the AJA HELO Plus as an H.264 encoder. Its optional AJA PlayToStream functionality allows prerecorded media to be scheduled and streamed directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialized hardware route for creators who specifically need standalone playout, not a requirement for the ordinary computer-and-encoder workflow. YouTube’s listing does not establish current price or availability.

Common problems and fixes
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is sending to the event’s current stream URL and key, then confirm it is online and using a supported protocol and codec. Re-copy the credentials if needed.
- The stream disconnects or buffers: Test at a bitrate the upload connection can sustain. Reduce the bitrate or output target and test again if the connection is unstable.
- The event is connected but shows the wrong picture: Confirm that the intended prerecorded file is selected as the encoder’s video input, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- Viewers cannot hear narration or computer audio: Verify the encoder’s audio source and codec, then listen to the preview before starting the event.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key.
- Viewers cannot rewind a long stream: DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. For streams under 12 hours, YouTube says the event is automatically archived.
