Set your encoder to send one steady frame rate for the entire YouTube Live broadcast; it does not need to switch output rates whenever the playlist changes clips. For a mix of 24fps and 30fps videos, 30fps is a practical starting point if you want the output to accommodate the 30fps material, but it is not a YouTube-mandated setting. Test both types of footage and their transitions before going public.
Understand the three frame rates involved
Mixed-rate playlists are easier to configure when you separate the frame rate of each source file from the encoder’s live output and the versions YouTube creates for viewers.
- Source frame rate: The frame rate at which an individual video was recorded. YouTube’s upload guidance says to encode and upload content at its recorded frame rate; common rates include 24fps and 30fps. That guidance concerns standalone uploads, not a requirement to change live output settings from clip to clip. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.
- Live output frame rate: The single rate your encoder sends for the broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder guidance allows up to 60fps and asks creators to specify resolution, frame rate and bitrate. YouTube says it automatically detects the selected encoder settings. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Viewer renditions: YouTube transcodes a live stream into different output formats for viewers. That does not mean a creator can send unrelated live frame rates clip by clip while maintaining one consistent encoder output.
Choose a stable output frame rate
For a playlist containing both 24fps and 30fps videos, choose one output rate that your encoder can maintain consistently. Try 30fps if the 30fps clips are important to the stream; consider 24fps if preserving the motion characteristics of the 24fps footage matters more. Neither is universally best for this mixed-source case, and YouTube does not prescribe a special mixed-rate playlist mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen source and output rates differ, motion may appear uneven because of duplicated or dropped frames, or other cadence artifacts. The reviewed YouTube and OBS documentation does not specify exactly how mixed-rate clips are converted or promise seamless transitions. Do not assume that YouTube’s viewer transcoding resolves those source-to-output differences.

Set the encoder’s live settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream’s encoder settings as the reference for the output you intend to send. Match bitrate recommendations to the actual resolution, frame rate and ingestion codec—not just to the source files in your playlist.
| Setting | Recommended configuration or guidance |
|---|---|
| Output frame rate | One stable rate for the broadcast. For this mix, test 30fps or 24fps based on your footage and workflow. YouTube allows up to 60fps but does not designate a preferred rate for mixed 24/30fps playlists. |
| 1080p30 bitrate | H.264: 14 Mbps recommended for live ingestion. AV1 or H.265: 10 Mbps recommended. Use the row for the codec and output you actually send. |
| Rate control | CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. |
| Listed video codecs | H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. |
These are YouTube’s current published live encoder recommendations; the bitrate figures above apply specifically to 1080p30. Check the current settings table for other resolutions, frame rates and codecs: YouTube live encoder settings.

Build and test the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide for source behavior and controls.
- Add a VLC Video source. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and select the playlist files. The source can play files sequentially or shuffle, and it can loop.
- Set the OBS output frame rate. Configure one live output rate—such as 30fps or 24fps—and keep it fixed for the broadcast. Do not change it for individual playlist items.
- Match the YouTube ingest settings. Set the resolution, codec, bitrate, CBR rate control and keyframe interval in OBS so they match the chosen YouTube live configuration.
- Test representative clips and transitions privately or with a test stream. Include both 24fps and 30fps material, especially clips with movement, and listen for audio sync changes. Check how the beginning and end of each item behave. OBS documents playlist controls, not guaranteed conversion quality or seamless transitions.
- Check the connection and stream health. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and monitoring stream health. Test at the bitrate you plan to use, rather than relying only on a speed-test result. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Start the public stream only after the test looks and sounds right. Verify playback in YouTube Live Control Room and on a viewer device; inspect motion, transitions and audio sync.
Handle primary and backup feeds consistently
If you configure primary and backup ingest feeds, give both the same frame rate. The YouTube Live Streaming API identifies a frame-rate mismatch between primary and backup streams as a stream health issue. See LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.

| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Judder or uneven motion on one type of clip | The source cadence differs from the fixed live output, or the encoder cannot maintain its output consistently. | Test the same representative clips at the alternate stable output rate. Check encoder load and inspect motion before choosing the rate for the public stream. |
| Stutter or problems at clip boundaries | A media file may not decode or transition as expected in the VLC playlist. | Test the actual files in the OBS scene, including the end of one clip and the start of the next. Confirm VLC is installed and review the playlist controls in the OBS guide. |
| Audio appears out of sync | A clip or transition may behave differently from the rest of the playlist. | Test with the actual audio and movement in each representative clip, then inspect sync at transitions as well as during steady playback. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or buffering | The outgoing bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. | Check YouTube stream health, lower the bitrate using the matching YouTube recommendation if needed, and preserve the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. See YouTube streaming tips. |
| Primary/backup stream health warning | The two feeds may be configured with different frame rates. | Set the same output frame rate on both feeds and check the YouTube Live Streaming API stream properties. |
