Set your encoder to stream a 16:9 horizontal video. A playlist does not, according to YouTube’s published guidance, force its videos into 4:3; YouTube’s player adapts to each video’s aspect ratio. Don’t add black bars or padding to make a 16:9 stream appear 4:3.
Does a 4:3 playlist change the live stream’s aspect ratio?
No playlist-specific 4:3 setting is identified in YouTube’s guidance. YouTube describes aspect ratio as a property the player adapts to for each video, rather than a format imposed by a playlist. The playlist conclusion follows from that per-video guidance; YouTube does not explicitly explain playlist aspect-ratio behavior in the cited help pages.
For computer playback, YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio. The player adapts to the video’s ratio and the viewer’s device, so a 16:9 live stream can remain 16:9 even if it is included in a playlist containing 4:3 videos. YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance advises against adding padding to the video itself because it interferes with the player’s dynamic sizing.

Set up a horizontal 16:9 YouTube Live stream
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Use its stream settings to obtain the stream URL and key. YouTube describes this setup in Manage live stream settings.
- Enter the stream URL and key in your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: use the stream’s intended key and do not publish or share it.
- Configure the encoder for the intended output. Choose a 16:9 resolution and set the frame rate and bitrate appropriate to that output and your available upload connection. YouTube’s encoder workflow detects the settings sent by the encoder and transcodes the stream into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the specific resolution and frame-rate combination you plan to send; the correct bitrate depends on those choices and your connection.
- Check whether Dual stream is enabled. YouTube’s Live Control Room can run horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats together. If you only want the horizontal stream, turn off Dual stream under the Stream tab’s Stream settings before going live.
- Preview the vertical layout if you are using Dual stream. The vertical version is a center crop by default, with options to fit to phone width or use a stacked layout. Check that the crop preserves any important text, faces, or action. YouTube says the vertical version cannot be added after the broadcast starts.
- Test before broadcasting and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing the stream and watching its health while live. Confirm that the encoder is sending the intended 16:9 output and that the preview looks correct before sharing the broadcast.
YouTube says Shorts-feed viewers see the vertical version when Dual stream is active, while other viewers see the horizontal version; both versions use the same live chat. See Get started with live streaming for the dual-stream behavior and layout controls.

Avoid forcing 4:3 with black bars
Do not add black bars, letterboxing, or other padding to the 16:9 video just to make it look 4:3 in a playlist. That changes the image content rather than changing a playlist setting, and YouTube advises against embedded padding because it can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. Let the player adapt to the actual video ratio.
