A stable upload-speed test does not guarantee that your encoder can continuously deliver its configured stream to YouTube’s ingest server. To find the cause of a “poor connection” warning, compare the exact message in YouTube Live Control Room with your encoder’s network and performance indicators, then test one variable at a time. The warning alone does not identify the fault.

Start with the signal, not the speed-test result

A speed test and a live stream measure different things. A test result is not proof that the live encoder’s connection to YouTube’s ingest server is stable at the stream’s configured bitrate. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance can help you check the profile and interpret the warning.

  1. Run a test stream and write down the exact Live Control Room health message and when it appears.
  2. Check the encoder at the same time. If you use OBS, note whether its network dropped-frame counter rises, whether the connection indicator changes, and whether there are encoding or rendering performance symptoms.
  3. Record the stream’s protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval. Check the actual settings rather than assuming your selected preset matches what is being sent.

The word “poor” on its own is not enough to diagnose a cause. YouTube documents configuration issues involving audio, video, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency and inconsistencies between primary and backup streams; it also describes a condition where YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. Use the exact message to choose what to check next. YouTube documents its health messages and configuration guidance here.

Check whether the stream profile fits YouTube’s recommendations

Match the encoder’s actual protocol and codec to YouTube’s current settings table. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, not measurements of your connection. YouTube lists different bitrate values for AV1 and H.265, so do not use an H.264 target without confirming the codec. Consult YouTube’s full encoder settings table for the matching combination.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
H.264 resolution and frame rate Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Do not apply these values blindly if your encoder uses a different ingestion protocol; check the settings guidance for that protocol. Test with audio and video movement similar to the real stream, since an idle or unusually simple test may not represent the live workload. YouTube’s recommendations also cover codec, resolution and frame-rate combinations.

Tell network delivery problems apart from local performance problems

If OBS reports dropped frames

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. This is evidence to investigate delivery to the ingest service, even if a general speed test looks good. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide suggests testing a lower bitrate, trying another server or service where appropriate, and checking VPN, security, network-prioritization software, drivers, Wi-Fi and network hardware.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, compare with a wired Ethernet test. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Treat this as a diagnostic, not proof that a cable—or a new router or network card—is the fix.

If network drops are not rising

Look for local rendering or encoding constraints instead of lowering settings at random. OBS identifies GPU load, frame rate, output settings and complex scenes as possible performance constraints. If its performance indicators point to that path, test a lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, or free GPU capacity. Those changes are not a fix for a network-only symptom. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guidance explains what to inspect.

Run a controlled test and escalate by category

  1. Change one setting only, then compare the YouTube health message and encoder indicators. For example, test a lower bitrate while leaving the rest of the profile unchanged.
  2. If you are on Wi-Fi, compare the same profile over wired Ethernet. If your encoder offers a different ingest server, test it separately rather than changing several network conditions at once.
  3. Do not treat dynamic bitrate as a root-cause fix. OBS warns that it can reduce quality; it may change the bitrate sent, but does not resolve the underlying connection problem. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting advice.
  4. If YouTube reports a configuration issue, follow that message’s category and verify the applicable encoder settings. If OBS continues to report network drops across controlled tests, check the software and hardware along the connection path; OBS recommends contacting your ISP if ordinary troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.
  5. If the local encoding or rendering indicators show a performance issue, reduce the workload demanded of OBS and the system, then test again.

The useful comparison is where the warning appears, when it begins, which profile is configured, and what the network path looks like (including Wi-Fi versus wired, VPN or security software, and server choice if available). Without the exact warning, logs and settings, there is no honest way to name one cause for your stream.
