“Excellent connection” does not rule out every cause of freezing. First check whether OBS is dropping frames, struggling to render or encode, or sending a healthy stream that only buffers for some viewers. Each symptom points to a different fix; use OBS statistics and YouTube stream health rather than the connection label alone.
Identify where the freezing starts
There are three distinct failure points. OBS’s dropped-frame counter concerns the connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server. Rendering or encoding lag concerns the computer’s ability to compose and encode the stream. Viewer buffering can happen even when the broadcaster’s outgoing stream is healthy, because playback devices and networks vary.
| Evidence to check | What it indicates | Who may be affected |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames increase | An unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. | Potentially the stream as sent from the broadcaster. |
| OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload | Local computer workload, including GPU capacity used to compose and render scenes. | The stream being produced by OBS. |
| OBS looks healthy, but viewers report buffering | Playback or network conditions on the viewer side may be responsible. | May affect some viewers and not others. |
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. It treats performance overload and viewer buffering as separate problems. OBS connection troubleshooting, OBS encoding performance troubleshooting, and OBS stream buffering troubleshooting explain the distinction.
Step 1: Check OBS for dropped frames
Look at OBS’s dropped-frame counter while the freezing occurs. If it rises, work on the connection path before changing scene complexity or buying faster hardware.
#1 Best Overall

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Confirm the stream bitrate is sustainable on your stable upload connection. OBS’s connection guide suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee: a speed test or a momentary peak does not establish sustained throughput.
- If available, try a different YouTube ingest server and see whether the counter changes.
- Check whether a VPN, security tool, or network-optimization software is interfering with the connection.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Ethernet is a diagnostic for wireless instability; it will not fix local encoding overload, congestion elsewhere on the ISP route, or a viewer’s own network.
- If the issue persists, OBS also recommends checking cables and network hardware, restarting the modem or router, and contacting your ISP.
Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide for the relevant checks. Its 75% suggestion is not the same kind of number as YouTube’s encoder bitrate recommendations.
Step 2: Check for rendering or encoding lag
If OBS’s connection counter is not rising but OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, the likely constraint is local workload rather than the route to YouTube. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; a healthy connection cannot compensate for a computer that cannot produce frames on time.

- Free GPU capacity by closing unnecessary GPU-intensive applications.
- If you are streaming a game, limit its frame rate so it does not consume all available GPU resources.
- Simplify complex scenes and reduce unnecessary sources or effects.
- If needed, lower the output resolution or frame rate and check whether the lag stops.
- On Windows, OBS suggests trying to run OBS as administrator when addressing GPU overload.
Make one adjustment at a time and observe the performance indicators again. See the OBS performance guide for further steps.
Step 3: Verify YouTube stream settings and health
Check YouTube’s stream-health information and confirm that your encoder settings match a bitrate your connection can reliably sustain. YouTube says to choose a quality that is reliable for the connection, test with representative audio and movement, and monitor stream health. Its recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are encoder settings, not measurements of your home’s upload capacity.

| H.264 output format | YouTube-recommended encoder bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
These are the H.264 values listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. They do not tell you whether a particular home connection can sustain that upload rate. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate, but test results should be treated as a check of the connection—not proof that it will remain stable during a live stream.
Before a scheduled stream, test with the kind of movement and audio your actual broadcast will contain. A mostly static scene may not reveal problems that appear during fast motion or a more demanding scene.

Step 4: Test whether freezing is limited to viewers
If OBS has no rising dropped frames or performance warning and YouTube’s stream health appears sound, ask affected viewers to test playback on another device or network. If playback improves elsewhere, the issue may be specific to their device or connection rather than your outgoing stream. OBS notes that viewer conditions can cause buffering even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames; see its buffering guide.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Reproduce the freeze and note whether OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises.
- If dropped frames rise, check sustainable bitrate, test another ingest server when available, review VPN or security software, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet.
- If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag instead, free GPU capacity, limit game frame rate, simplify scenes, and reduce output resolution or frame rate if necessary.
- Review YouTube stream health and verify the encoder bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- If OBS and YouTube appear healthy, compare viewer playback from another device or network.
