A stable bitrate reading in OBS does not guarantee that YouTube is receiving the bitrate it expects or that your connection is delivering it consistently. First check YouTube Live Control Room’s exact stream-health warning, then compare the selected ingest resolution and codec with OBS’s actual output. If those match, watch OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter during a test and troubleshoot the connection if it rises.
Why YouTube can report low bitrate while OBS looks stable
OBS’s bitrate display is only one clue. It does not prove that the stream matches YouTube’s selected ingest settings, nor does a steady reading at one moment rule out intermittent delivery problems along the connection to YouTube’s ingest server. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations depend on the codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no universal target that fixes every low-bitrate warning.
The exact message matters. YouTube’s live error guidance distinguishes bitrate problems from codec, keyframe, and frame-rate issues, so do not assume every warning that appears alongside a stable OBS reading means you should immediately lower the bitrate. Start with YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

Diagnose the warning in order
- Read the precise YouTube warning. In Live Control Room, check stream health and note whether YouTube identifies an incorrect bitrate, codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, or another problem. Keep the warning visible or record its exact wording for comparison during your test.
- Compare YouTube’s selected ingest settings with OBS output. Check the selected resolution in YouTube’s Ingestion Settings and the actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, and video bitrate in OBS. YouTube says that when you are not using a variable-resolution entrypoint, the stream must use the bitrate selected for the chosen resolution. If your connection cannot support that resolution, YouTube advises lowering the chosen resolution. See its live error guidance.
- Check the live encoder format. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS live settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. They specify constant bitrate (CBR), recommend a two-second keyframe interval, and say not to exceed four seconds. Use settings supported by your chosen workflow and address any specific codec or audio warning YouTube reports. The current recommendations and supported settings are on YouTube’s live encoder settings page.
- Run a test and watch OBS network statistics. During the test, check whether network-dropped frames increase or OBS’s connection indicator changes. Review the OBS log after the test, not just the bitrate reading. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate; this is distinct from other OBS performance problems. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
- Change one connection variable at a time if drops occur. Test a different ingest server, reduce the video bitrate to a level your stable upload connection can sustain, and check VPN, security, or network-optimization software. If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. Compare the next test’s network-drop count and YouTube health message before making another change. These steps follow the OBS connection guide.
- Use the stream-key path for a stream-start or key error. If YouTube reports a third-party encoder start error rather than a bitrate problem, YouTube recommends refreshing the stream key in Live Control Room and updating it in the encoder. If you started through a software sign-in option without a key, consult that software’s support. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting page.
Check bitrate against codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube’s current live encoder table gives recommended bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain the setting. YouTube Help does not display a publication year for this table, so check the current official table for other resolutions and minimums before changing your stream.

For a useful test, use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and representative motion you plan to stream. YouTube also recommends testing before going live, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health during the event. A speed-test result is not a substitute for observing whether the live connection actually drops frames.
If the warning persists, use the symptom to choose the next step
- Network-dropped frames rise: treat this as a delivery-path or capacity issue. Try another server, lower the bitrate, check VPN/security/network-optimization software and network drivers, and compare wired networking against Wi-Fi if applicable. Follow the one-change-at-a-time approach in the OBS guide.
- No network drops, but YouTube still reports low bitrate: recheck the selected ingest resolution and codec against OBS’s actual output and YouTube’s recommendation for that exact combination. Verify CBR and the two-second recommended keyframe interval, with no interval over four seconds. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and the precise error message.
- YouTube reports codec, keyframe, or frame-rate trouble: correct that setting rather than treating the message as proof of a bandwidth problem. Use the setting-specific warning and YouTube’s error guidance.
- The stream will not start or YouTube reports a key problem: refresh the key in Live Control Room, update OBS with the replacement, and consult YouTube’s stream-start troubleshooting steps.
Do not use YouTube’s prerecorded-upload encoding recommendations to set a live stream: they address a different workflow. For this problem, use the live encoder settings page.
