YouTube Live Redirect can send viewers from a source live stream to a selected live stream or Premiere when the source ends. To set it up, open YouTube Studio > Content > Live, edit the source stream, then go to Customization > Redirect > Add and choose the destination. The sending channel must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions cover eligibility and setup.
What Live Redirect does—and when it runs
Live Redirect moves viewers from one broadcast to a selected Premiere or live stream after the source stream ends. It does not send viewers away while the source is still live, and it does not operate or keep the destination broadcast running. The destination must be available to select when you configure the redirect.
Viewers may need to wait a few seconds for the player to reload. If autoplay is disabled, they may need to click Play. YouTube recommends allowing time for the transition. YouTube Help: How to use YouTube Live Redirect and TeamYouTube’s Live Redirect announcement explain these behaviors.

Set up a redirect to a 24/7 stream
- Check sender eligibility. The channel ending the source stream must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes.
- Make the destination available. Have the destination live stream running or otherwise available in the redirect picker. TeamYouTube’s May 3, 2022 announcement, updated in June 2022, described eligible destinations as active or upcoming live streams and upcoming Premieres. Picker behavior can change, so confirm the intended destination appears when you configure the redirect.
- Get permission if the destination is on another channel. The receiving creator controls which channels may redirect viewers to their content. In YouTube Studio, the receiving channel can manage redirect permissions under Settings > Community. YouTube describes permission for channels the creator subscribes to when subscriptions are public, permission for all channels, or a manually maintained allowlist of up to 100 channels. Check the receiving channel’s current setting before scheduling the handoff.
- Choose the redirect on the source stream. In YouTube Studio, go to Content > Live, edit the source video, open Customization, find Redirect, select Add, and choose the destination.
- End the source broadcast deliberately. The redirect is triggered when that source stream ends. It is not a persistent link or a way to route viewers away from a source that continues broadcasting.
Can a channel redirect to its own 24/7 stream?
YouTube’s official help page does not explicitly establish whether a channel can select a separate live stream on that same channel as the destination. Do not assume it will work: check whether the intended stream appears in the source stream’s Redirect picker. If it is absent, YouTube has not made that destination selectable in your setup.

Keep the destination stream running
Operating a continuous destination broadcast is separate from setting Live Redirect. YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming: an encoder can be software or standalone hardware, and you configure it with the stream URL and stream key before starting the feed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current process. The redirect itself does not require a particular paid encoder or hardware.
If you use a long-running stream, plan separately for its archive and playback behavior. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. For very long streams, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. This DVR caveat does not mean a stream cannot stay live beyond 12 hours. Troubleshooting
- The Redirect option or destination is unavailable: Verify the sender meets YouTube’s subscriber and Community Guidelines eligibility requirements. Confirm that the destination is available in the picker; for another channel’s stream, ask its creator to grant permission.
- Viewers remain on the source stream: Check that the source stream actually ended. Live Redirect does not trigger while it is still running.
- Viewers do not move immediately: Allow a few seconds for the player to reload. Viewers with autoplay disabled may need to click Play.
- The long stream has no full archive: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording if you need an archive.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams; this is a playback limitation, not proof that the live broadcast has stopped.
