A YouTube playlist is not a live broadcast. For one finished sermon, upload it as a regular video or schedule a Premiere if you want an event-style first viewing. To send prerecorded sermons as a scheduled YouTube Live event, use an encoder such as OBS: YouTube creates and manages the event, while OBS plays the files and sends the video feed. That feed is live as a broadcast, even though the sermon itself was recorded earlier.

Choose the workflow that matches the service

Church need Better fit What to know
Show one finished sermon without live production Upload it as a normal video, or consider a Premiere for an event-style first showing. A normal YouTube playlist organizes published videos; it does not turn them into a live stream. Premiere and Live are different formats, so check the current YouTube Studio options and moderation needs.
Combine a sermon with welcome slides, clips, scene changes, or a live host A scheduled YouTube Live event connected to OBS. OBS composes scenes and sends the encoder feed. It requires an operator to configure and supervise playback and production.
Play several local recordings in one broadcast OBS with its VLC Video source. VLC must be installed. Set and rehearse the playlist order, loop or shuffle behavior, audio, and what happens at the end.
Share an upcoming event page and let viewers set a reminder Schedule a YouTube Live event. YouTube scheduling creates an upcoming stream page that can be shared; viewers may have a reminder option. A playlist alone does not create this live event.
Run a recurring channel unattended Use a supervised scheduled-event workflow or evaluate a purpose-built playout service. The official workflow described here does not establish that a YouTube playlist can run itself as a live broadcast. Check any third-party service’s capabilities and current terms before relying on it.

Live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived by YouTube; verify the event’s visibility and review the resulting replay. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers scheduling, preview, going live, and archiving.

Set up a prerecorded sermon stream with OBS

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. See Get started with live streaming for the current prerequisites and streaming methods.
  2. Schedule the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a scheduled stream. Set the event details and visibility, then share the upcoming event link with the congregation. Scheduling can support viewer reminders. Refer to Manage live stream settings.
  3. Prepare an OBS scene for one file. Add a Media Source and select the local sermon recording. Check the source’s loop and playback-end behavior so the stream does not unexpectedly go blank or repeat.
  4. Prepare a playlist for multiple local files. Add a VLC Video source, make sure VLC is installed, and configure the file order and playlist loop or shuffle options. Rehearse the full sequence, including transitions and the last file. OBS documents these controls in Media Sources.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. Configure YouTube as the streaming service in OBS, or enter the stream URL and stream key supplied by Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your event. YouTube’s instruction is: “You’ll create a stream key in YouTube, and then enter it into your encoder.” If it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before the next broadcast.
  6. Test before the service. Run a private or unlisted end-to-end test. Check OBS’s preview, audio level and routing, aspect ratio, slides and overlays, event link, and how the file or playlist ends. Confirm that the sermon is audible and that no unintended desktop audio or scene appears. YouTube recommends testing and checking preview, audio, and video in its Streaming tips and YouTube live streaming tips.
  7. Start the broadcast deliberately. On the day, start the encoder early and verify the preview in Live Control Room. Then start the event there unless you have intentionally configured auto-start. YouTube recommends starting the encoder before the event; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  8. End and review. End the stream in YouTube and stop OBS. Review the archived replay and confirm its visibility. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Test the church’s actual playback, not just the connection

A stream can connect successfully while still failing the congregation: the wrong file may play, the sermon may be silent, or the broadcast may end on a blank scene. Use a full test with the same files, scene collection, audio routing, account, and event settings planned for the service. Have someone watch from a separate device and network if possible, so the church can confirm what viewers receive rather than relying only on the OBS preview.

  • Check that the event title, time, visibility, and shared link are correct.
  • Listen for sermon audio and confirm the expected microphone or other live audio is routed to the output.
  • Verify the video framing and any slides, overlays, or transitions on the viewer side.
  • Test the last seconds of the file and decide whether the source should stop, transition, or repeat.
  • For a multi-file playlist, confirm the order and whether loop or shuffle is intended.

Common problems and fixes

  • The church cannot schedule or start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether live-streaming restrictions have applied in the past 90 days. Review YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
  • The scheduled event has no incoming picture: Confirm OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube event and that the stream key and URL match the current Live Control Room details. Check that OBS is actively sending and wait for the preview to appear before starting the event.
  • The stream connects but the sermon is silent: Check the Media Source or VLC source playback, OBS audio meters, source and desktop audio routing, and the monitored output. Repeat the viewer-side audio test.
  • A local file will not play: Confirm the file path is accessible on the computer running OBS, then remove and reselect the source if needed. For a VLC playlist, verify VLC is installed and that each listed file can be opened.
  • The playlist plays in the wrong order or repeats unexpectedly: Review the VLC Video source’s playlist order and loop or shuffle settings, then run the whole sequence before the event.
  • The broadcast ends too early or shows a blank screen: Check the source’s playback-end behavior and whether OBS changed scenes or stopped sending when the file ended. Test the exact ending and configure the intended transition or repeat behavior.
  • The archived replay is missing or not visible to viewers: Confirm that the stream ended, then review the event and archive visibility settings in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to live streams under 12 hours; it does not remove the need to check the resulting replay.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the church wants prerecorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. Every slot streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.

For churches in India, UPI works; card checkout is available worldwide. Review sermon rights before streaming: being prerecorded or publicly accessible does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast copyrighted music, video, or other material.
