If audio gradually drifts out of sync during a YouTube Live loop, first find the earliest point where the mismatch appears: the source file, encoder output, YouTube preview or archive, or viewer playback. That comparison tells you which part of the stream to investigate; no single setting is an established fix for every long-running loop.
Find where the audio drift begins
Compare the same moment in the loop at each available checkpoint. YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder and reviewing the local archive for audio or video problems. If either is already out of sync, start with the source files and the way audio and video reach the encoder. If those checks look clean, move on to stream health, the outbound connection, and playback conditions. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Source file: Check whether the audio is synchronized with the video before streaming, including near the end of the recording.
- Encoder output: Listen to and watch the encoder’s outgoing preview. If it is already wrong, the problem is upstream of YouTube.
- YouTube Live Control Room preview or local archive: Compare these with the encoder output. A mismatch that first appears here points toward the stream path or YouTube-side handling, but does not by itself identify a cause.
- Viewer playback: Ask whether multiple viewers experience the same mismatch and whether it appears in the archive. If only one viewer reports it, check that viewer’s playback conditions before changing the source or encoder.
Note when the mismatch starts and whether it gets larger over time. Gradual growth and a fixed offset can suggest different parts of the chain, but are clues rather than proof. Record which checkpoints are affected and any dashboard messages at the same time.
Check the source, encoder, and routed inputs
Inspect the loop recording
Play the recording locally at the beginning and near the point where the live stream sounds wrong. If the local file is out of sync, correct or replace that file before investigating network settings. Also check that the encoder is receiving the intended audio and video sources; an incorrect or separately routed audio input can create a mismatch before the stream leaves your setup.

Inspect the encoder
- Update the encoder software and check its error messages.
- Verify the audio and video sources routed into the stream.
- Watch CPU load while the loop is running; YouTube includes CPU load among the checks for encoder problems.
- Compare the encoder preview with the local archive.
- If the source and output appear clean but the problem persists, test with a different encoder as a diagnostic comparison. That test does not prove the original encoder is at fault.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors, routed sources, CPU load, the local archive, and the outbound connection.
Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Check the Live Control Room while streaming and note the message and timestamp when a warning or error appears. YouTube’s dashboard checks the incoming stream and can show when errors occur; its configuration diagnostics cover audio, video, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, and consistency between primary and backup streams. Use a message to narrow the investigation to the reported issue—do not assume it explains audio drift unless the evidence connects the two.

Verify settings and test before the next run
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as a configuration check, not as a guaranteed drift remedy. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio and a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of four seconds. Review the settings actually sent by your encoder and compare them with YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Before the next long run, test with audio and video motion representative of the planned loop, then monitor stream health during the event. YouTube Help specifically advises testing with similar audio and video movement to what the stream will contain. A short static test may not expose a problem that emerges during a changing, long-running loop.
Check the connection and playback conditions
If the encoder output is healthy, test outbound internet speed and investigate connection issues with your ISP, as YouTube recommends. Network congestion can delay a live stream. YouTube also notes that lower latency leaves the player with less read-ahead buffer. Neither fact establishes that a connection problem or latency setting caused audio/video drift, so compare the encoder, dashboard, archive, and affected viewers before making that diagnosis.

There is no loop-specific official YouTube procedure that guarantees a fix for gradual drift. If the checks above do not isolate it, preserve evidence from the next run rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
