If audio and video drift apart during a long YouTube Live loop, first find where the mismatch begins. Compare the source or a local recording with the live player and, afterward, the YouTube archive. The location of the drift determines what to investigate; changing latency or one encoder setting is not a guaranteed fix.
Find the first place the audio and video separate
Check the same point in the loop at each stage you can access. This comparison is a practical diagnostic method, not a specific YouTube-published drift test.
- Check the source. Play the video directly, if possible, and listen and watch near the beginning and a later point. If the source itself drifts, the problem is upstream of YouTube.
- Check a local recording. If your workflow records the encoder output, inspect it at the same points. A local recording that is already out of sync points toward source playback, audio routing, or encoder timing.
- Check the live player. Compare playback with the source or local recording. Test another device or connection if the mismatch appears only for one viewer.
- Check the YouTube archive after the stream. If the live player was in sync but the archive is not, examine the recording and archive path rather than assuming the source was faulty.
Write down where the mismatch first appears and whether it is consistent across devices. That evidence helps distinguish an input or encoder problem from delivery or playback behavior.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitoring audio/video quality and Live Control Room health messages during the event. For a long loop, check near the start and at later intervals so you can identify when the drift begins; that sampling schedule is practical guidance, not an official YouTube requirement. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance and its live-streaming tips.

Check encoder settings and signal routing
Use YouTube’s general encoder guidance as a baseline, not as proof that a setting will cure gradual drift. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Resetting keyframes alone is not an established fix for audio and video gradually separating.
- Confirm the intended audio input and video source are both routed into the encoder.
- Check whether the source or encoder output is already out of sync before it reaches YouTube.
- Note the encoder’s settings and any health messages when the mismatch starts; avoid changing several settings at once, which makes the result harder to interpret.
For setup and operating details, consult YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Check upload stability and distinguish drift from delay
YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below the available upload bandwidth, with about 20% headroom. Connection disruptions can break a stream, and network conditions can affect delivery. Check the connection and the Live Control Room’s health messages while the problem is occurring; YouTube’s network and streaming tips explain its guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA stream that reaches viewers late is not necessarily out of sync. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay from capture to display for viewers. Latency concerns how far behind the live event playback is; audio/video sync concerns whether the audio and picture line up with each other. Check the latter directly rather than treating all delay as drift.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Change latency only for the tradeoff it addresses
YouTube’s latency modes affect delivery delay and buffering behavior; its guidance does not say that changing latency repairs audio gradually drifting relative to video. Lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer, which can increase buffering or make encoder and player issues more apparent. Choose a setting based on how much audience interaction matters and how much buffering the stream can tolerate, not as a presumed sync fix. See YouTube’s explanation of live-streaming latency.
Use the symptoms to choose the next check
| What you observe | Where to investigate next |
|---|---|
| The source or local recording is already out of sync | Source playback, audio routing, or encoder timing. |
| The source/local recording is in sync, but YouTube live playback is not | Encoder health and settings, network observations, and whether the issue appears on other devices or connections. |
| Only one viewer device or connection shows the mismatch | Playback and connection conditions on that device. |
| The live player is in sync, but the post-stream archive is not | The recording and archive path. |
Use YouTube’s Live Control Room metrics guidance to review stream health and status messages. YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance is relevant when the symptom appears limited to playback. A separate YouTube article notes that mismatched audio and video track durations can desynchronize an uploaded video, but that advice concerns uploads; it does not establish the cause of drift in a live loop. See YouTube’s upload audio/video sync troubleshooting.
