If your YouTube Live stream looks blurry even at the recommended bitrate, first verify what your encoder is actually sending: codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Then check YouTube’s stream-health messages and whether your upload connection can sustain the stream with headroom. A bitrate recommendation is a target for a particular live-ingestion setup, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive a sharp picture.
Start by checking the signal YouTube actually receives
Encoder presets can be misleading if a setting was overridden or the stream is using a different codec than expected. Check the encoder’s output settings and YouTube Live Control Room, then match the live-ingestion recommendation to the actual codec, resolution and frame rate. Do not use YouTube’s upload-video bitrate chart for a live stream; the two are different.
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following bitrates. The H.264 figure is listed first; the AV1/H.265 figure is second. These are recommended live-ingestion targets, not minimums.

YouTube also lists minimums, which are lower bounds rather than the recommended targets. For example, at 1080p60 the minimum is 6 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Check the YouTube live encoder settings for the full current table and applicable requirements.

Check the encoder settings beyond bitrate
For live encoding, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. Progressive scan is also listed among its recommended advanced settings. Verify these along with the codec and actual output resolution and frame rate rather than assuming a saved profile is being applied.
YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. Manual settings are available with a custom stream key. If you use manual settings, make sure the selected values match what the encoder sends; a mismatch can undermine diagnosis and delivery.

Make sure the connection has enough upload capacity
The encoder’s bitrate is not the only demand on the connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom, and other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to the stream. A second, backup stream running at the same time also adds outbound traffic. YouTube advises: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).”
Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to the live event and account for other active traffic. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” If your connection cannot reliably sustain the configured stream plus headroom, reduce the ingestion resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a combination it can maintain. Higher resolution or frame rate can demand more bandwidth; reducing either can affect detail or motion smoothness.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet when streaming from a computer
If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, test the same setup over a wired Ethernet connection. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer livestreaming: “For live streaming from a computer, it’s recommended to use an Ethernet cable connection.” This is a way to isolate wireless or network instability, not a guaranteed fix for blur caused by encoder settings, the source, or viewer playback.
Test the stream and locate where the blur appears
- Before the event, run an unlisted test with the same encoder, network, audio and representative motion you plan to use live.
- During the test, watch the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room and note any warnings or interruptions.
- Check playback on the device and network where the blur was reported. Compare with another device or connection, and determine whether the issue affects all viewers or only one playback setup.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers using different devices and networks. Therefore, a setting shown in the encoder cannot by itself establish what a particular viewer is receiving. If the stream-health information and encoder output look sound but only one viewer sees blur, investigate that viewer’s selected playback quality, device and network before changing the encoder or buying hardware.

Choose a change based on the evidence
- Actual codec, resolution, frame rate or bitrate differs from the intended profile: correct the encoder output and compare it with the corresponding live-ingestion recommendation.
- CBR or keyframe interval is not set as recommended: adjust those settings, then repeat the test.
- Upload capacity is tight or unstable: reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate until the connection can sustain the stream with headroom; check shared traffic and any backup stream.
- Wi-Fi appears to be the weak link: repeat the test over Ethernet before making other changes.
- Only a particular viewer sees blur: check that viewer’s playback quality, device and network rather than lowering quality for everyone without evidence.
There is no universal single setting that fixes every blurry stream. Make one evidence-based change at a time and compare the same type of motion and playback conditions so you can tell whether it helped.
