If the warning remains, verify the frame-count setting against your stream’s frame rate, then check whether the stream YouTube receives matches the encoder’s configuration.
What the 2-second keyframe interval means
A keyframe is a reference frame in a video stream. The interval is the time between those frames. YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend a 2-second keyframe frequency and say not to exceed 4 seconds. Its troubleshooting guidance likewise asks creators to send keyframes every 2 seconds. YouTube’s live encoder settings and live-stream error guidance give the applicable limits.
Some encoders express the interval in seconds; others use a frame count or GOP-size value. Since the count represents frames, it depends on the encoded frame rate. A setting that was correct before you changed frame rate may no longer represent two seconds.
Convert the interval to frames

Use the frame rate actually sent in the stream, not simply the frame rate of the source recording. For a different rate, multiply frames per second by two. If your encoder offers a time-based interval, set it to 2 seconds directly.

How to fix a keyframe warning
- Open the encoder that is sending the stream. Find its keyframe interval, keyframe frequency, or GOP-size control. The label and menu location vary by encoder; YouTube’s general guidance does not establish a universal menu path.
- Set the interval to 2 seconds. If the field accepts only a frame count, use two times the encoded frames per second—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.
- Recheck after changing frame rate. YouTube notes that frame rate and keyframe frequency are linked. Recalculate the count and confirm the output timing whenever you change the frame rate.
- Check the stream-health message if the warning persists. YouTube says ingestion errors can result in incorrect GOP sizes, so the delivered stream may not match the visible encoder setting.
- Use a closed GOP if the encoder exposes that option. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. Not every encoder offers this control.
- Test before the event and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing with the encoder before going live and monitoring stream health while streaming.
What else to check—and what not to change
A keyframe-interval warning points first to the interval, frame-rate conversion, or the GOP YouTube is receiving. YouTube’s relevant live-stream settings also list supported video codecs (H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1), frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR bitrate encoding. Those are adjacent settings, not stated remedies for a keyframe warning; do not change codec or bitrate unless a separate error identifies them. YouTube’s encoder settings page provides the current recommendations.
The documented correction is an encoder setting. YouTube describes streaming through software applications or standalone hardware encoders, but its guidance does not indicate that you need to buy or replace equipment. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains encoder-based streaming.

If you stream prerecorded video around the clock
For the specific problem in this article, first configure the encoder or service sending the stream to use the recommended interval.
