A reconnecting YouTube stream during a power fluctuation does not, by itself, prove that electricity is the cause. The interruption could be in the encoder, server, router or modem, or the internet connection between your home and YouTube. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health errors alongside your encoder’s status at the moment the stream drops; then address the layer that actually failed.
First identify what is disconnecting
During the next incident, note the time and distinguish an incoming-stream failure from a viewer playback problem. Record whether the encoder reports a disconnect and reconnect, YouTube Live Control Room shows an error, viewers report buffering, or the server or network equipment restarts. Viewers having trouble does not necessarily mean the incoming stream ended.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes viewer reports by scope: if many viewers on different internet connections report trouble, check the encoder and test the strength of the outbound connection. YouTube: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Use the timestamps to find the failed layer
Check YouTube stream health
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream health around the recorded incident time. YouTube describes critical errors that can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, and moderate warnings that can reduce quality. The timestamped message is more useful than guessing from the word “reconnecting.” See YouTube’s stream health troubleshooting guidance.

Check the encoder and server
Confirm whether the encoder stayed running and whether its outgoing preview or status changed. YouTube recommends using a current encoder version, checking the outgoing stream, reviewing CPU load, and inspecting a local recording if one is available. If the encoder appears healthy, investigate the outbound internet connection.
If you use OBS, watch its connection indicators
In OBS, an increasing “Dropped frames” counter together with a yellow or red connection square indicates that the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Separate a power failure from an internet failure
Power fluctuations can interrupt the server, modem, router, or another device the stream depends on. But an ISP or upstream fault can also break the stream while all home equipment stays powered. Check whether the server rebooted, whether network devices lost power, and whether the connection failed without a local restart. Test outbound connection strength under your normal workload; if the test or recurring incidents point to the connection, ask your ISP to investigate. YouTube’s advice is direct: “If you find issues with your Internet connection, contact your Internet service provider to troubleshoot.”

If local equipment loses power
A UPS or inverter may keep the server and network equipment running through a local interruption. Size backup power for the combined load of the encoder/server, modem, router, and any other required devices—not just the server. The capacity and runtime you need depend on that total load and how long you want to bridge an outage, so no single runtime recommendation fits every setup. Test the complete chain during a controlled power transfer and confirm that neither the devices nor the internet connection drop.

A power backup cannot keep an unavailable ISP connection online. The same distinction applies if only the router or modem loses power: backing up the server alone will not preserve the whole stream path. For practical guidance on the power-backup side, see power-cut preparedness guidance.
If the encoder or server stops
Use the incident time to correlate encoder logs, server restarts, CPU load, and YouTube’s health messages. Update the encoder if it is out of date, verify that the outgoing stream is present, and review a local archive if available. A server reboot during a power event supports investigating local power; an encoder disconnect without a reboot leaves the network path and encoder settings to check.

If the ISP path is unstable
Test the outbound connection while the server is operating as it normally does, rather than relying only on an idle connection test. Note encoder or OBS connection warnings and give the ISP the incident times and test results. A UPS may protect your side of the connection, but it cannot repair an outage upstream.
