First check whether the picture is missing in your encoder or only after the feed reaches YouTube. If the encoder preview is black, troubleshoot the video source and encoder; if it looks normal, check YouTube’s stream health, the outbound connection, and the stream destination. A reconnect alone does not identify the cause.
Find where the picture disappears
After reconnecting, compare the encoder’s preview or program output with the stream shown in YouTube Live Control Room. This split narrows the fault to the source/encoder path or the delivery/platform path.
| What you see | Next checks | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder preview or output is black | Check media playback, source selection and routing, encoder errors, CPU load, software version, and the local recording. | The issue is likely somewhere in the source-to-encoder path; the symptom alone does not identify the component. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder and source conditions. |
| The encoder picture is normal, but YouTube is black or has no picture | Check Live Control Room stream health, outbound connectivity, the stream destination, and the matching stream key. | YouTube says a healthy encoder output can point to an outbound internet connection issue. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide covers these checks. |
| YouTube shows a placeholder or a notice | Review YouTube Studio notices, including any copyright notice, and follow the stated resolution steps. | YouTube documents that identification of third-party content can cause a placeholder to replace the live image and may interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains this possibility. |
Fix a black picture in the encoder
- Confirm the pre-recorded video is playing. In the encoder, check that the media source is active and playing at the intended point. If playback is paused, ended, or failed to resume, restart or reload the source using the encoder’s controls.
- Check the active scene or program. Confirm the video source is selected, visible, and routed to the output being streamed. A source can still exist in the project while a different scene or program is being sent.
- Inspect encoder errors and system load. Look for media-decoding or output errors and check whether CPU load is unusually high. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load when troubleshooting stream quality. YouTube troubleshooting
- Check the local recording or archive. If it is also black at the same point, the problem may be in the source file or playback path rather than YouTube delivery. YouTube recommends reviewing the local archive as part of troubleshooting. YouTube troubleshooting
- Update or isolate the encoder. Make sure the encoder software is current. If the output remains black, test with another encoder to help determine whether the problem is specific to the current application. YouTube includes updating and testing another encoder among its troubleshooting steps. YouTube troubleshooting
Fix a picture that disappears only on YouTube
- Check stream health in Live Control Room. Look for warnings or errors while the encoder preview remains visible. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and the preview before going live. YouTube troubleshooting
- Test the outbound connection. A healthy encoder picture does not prove that the video is reaching YouTube reliably. Check the connection carrying the stream and whether it can sustain the selected output settings. YouTube identifies outbound internet connectivity as a possible issue when the encoder output looks and sounds healthy. YouTube troubleshooting
- Verify destination and key. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube stream URL and using the key associated with that stream. If YouTube or the encoder reports a startup or key error, follow the relevant instructions to obtain and apply a new key. A key reset is not established as a universal fix for a black picture after reconnecting. YouTube troubleshooting · YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- Check for YouTube notices. If the viewer-facing stream shows a placeholder rather than your encoder picture, inspect YouTube Studio for copyright or other stream notices before changing equipment. YouTube says identified third-party content can lead to a placeholder and possible interruption or termination. YouTube copyright guidance
Check encoder settings before testing again
Settings changes are not a proven cure for every reconnect failure. Once you have located the failure, make sure the encoder configuration is compatible with YouTube and your available upload capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR); its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 among supported codecs. Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps; select a rate the source, encoder, and connection can sustain.
- Bitrate and resolution: Match the encoder’s output to YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen resolution and frame rate, and ensure the outbound connection can carry it reliably. Consult YouTube’s current table rather than guessing a bitrate. YouTube encoder settings guidance
Run a controlled reconnect test
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the correct event and preview are selected.
- Start the encoder with the intended pre-recorded source; check that the preview shows a moving picture before relying on the stream.
- Confirm the local recording or archive is growing and contains video.
- Monitor both encoder output and Live Control Room stream health during the test.
- If you use encoder failover, test it in a controlled session and verify that the picture returns after switching or reconnecting. YouTube recommends checking the preview, archive growth, failover, and audio/video monitoring. YouTube troubleshooting
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuously looping pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
