The interruption may instead come from the brief loss of internet connectivity that occurred when the router’s WAN session reset. Keep your existing stream URL and key, check what disconnected, and test your encoder’s reconnect behavior with an unlisted stream before relying on it for an important broadcast.
Does a public-IP change require a new YouTube stream key?
Usually, do not reset your stream key solely because your ISP assigned a different public IP. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password for sending the feed. Its setup guidance does not say the key is bound to the creator’s public IP or must change when that address changes. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions.
YouTube does recommend creating a new stream key for certain encoder start errors. Treat that as a separate troubleshooting step, not a routine response to an ISP address change. First check the encoder’s error and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health; use YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance if the encoder will not start or the stream remains unhealthy.
Reconnect setup: diagnose the interruption in order
- Keep the current event settings. Have the event’s stream URL and key available in the encoder. Do not regenerate the key just because the public IP changed.
- Compare timestamps. Check the encoder’s connection or error log, the router or ONT WAN event log if available, and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Note whether the router lost WAN service or its authenticated session around the same time the encoder disconnected.
- Confirm that internet access recovered. Check whether the encoder reports an active connection and whether a direct outbound speed test works again. YouTube advises checking outbound connectivity and contacting the ISP when the connection is deficient; see its streaming tips.
- Enable and test encoder recovery. Find the reconnect or retry controls in the documentation for your encoder and version. The YouTube help pages cited here do not specify OBS or other encoder control names, or guarantee that an encoder can rejoin the same event after a WAN reset. Avoid relying on guessed menu paths.
- Check the YouTube event state. Once connectivity returns, check whether the encoder is sending and whether Live Control Room reports a healthy feed. A reconnect can involve a visible interruption; the available YouTube guidance does not promise that playback will continue without interruption after a network reset.
- Test the complete recovery path. Run an unlisted test stream, deliberately interrupt the primary connection, and observe whether the encoder retries and whether the event accepts the feed again. YouTube recommends testing the encoder, preview, monitoring and failover behavior before a real broadcast; see YouTube Live streaming tips.
Work out whether the ISP, router or encoder disconnected
An IP change can coincide with a WAN or authenticated-session reset, but the change alone does not confirm the cause. YouTube identifies connection reliability, upload bandwidth and encoder health as factors to check. If the encoder appears healthy but the stream still has a problem, the outbound internet connection may be responsible; YouTube advises contacting the ISP when connection tests show an issue.

Use the timing of the evidence rather than assuming that a new address ended the broadcast:
- If the router or ONT logs a WAN disconnect at the same time as the encoder loses its connection, investigate the ISP link or router session.
- If the WAN connection remains up but the encoder reports an error, investigate the encoder, its configuration and its connection to the event.
- If the encoder reconnects but YouTube reports an unhealthy feed or does not show the expected event state, check Live Control Room and the event’s settings.
- If the public IP changes while the encoder remains connected, that points away from a simple address-change explanation; verify with the ISP and encoder documentation before drawing a firm conclusion.
Where supported, connecting the streaming computer to the router over Ethernet can reduce Wi-Fi variability. It will not prevent an ISP session reset, stop a public IP from changing, or fix an encoder that cannot reconnect.

Choose stream settings for the connection you actually have
Set the encoder’s bitrate to fit measured upload capacity, leaving headroom rather than using all available bandwidth. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming device. YouTube’s recommended ranges vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, so check its current encoder settings and bitrate guidance rather than relying on a fixed number that may not suit your format or current recommendations. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion.
- Check outbound upload performance under conditions similar to your planned broadcast.
- Choose resolution, frame rate and codec first, then use the corresponding current YouTube bitrate range.
- Confirm the encoder uses the intended YouTube server URL and stream key.
- Monitor the preview, audio and video, and stream health during a test broadcast.
A bitrate that exceeds the stable upload capacity can make recovery harder: the connection may return, but the encoder may still struggle to deliver a healthy feed. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and connection reliability.

What to ask your Indian ISP
Contact the provider with the time of the interruption and ask whether the router’s WAN, PPPoE or DHCP session dropped then. Also ask whether your connection uses a dynamic public address or provider-side NAT, and whether a public or static IP option is available on your exact plan. Availability and terms can differ by provider and plan; there is no established universal Indian ISP policy or offer that can be applied to every connection.
A TRAI-hosted consultation response dated 20 January 2016 records respondent Derick Thomas’s view that customers needing a public IP should receive one free of charge. When to add a backup internet path
If the stream is important enough to justify extra equipment or service, consider a genuinely independent second internet path. Evaluate whether it uses a separate access network or provider, whether its upload capacity is adequate in real conditions, how much interruption failover causes, whether your encoder or network setup supports the switchover, and the total cost. Do not assume that two connections provide seamless failover without testing.
YouTube’s advice to test a backup encoder is not proof that a separate ISP path will fail over automatically. Test the exact arrangement you intend to use, including what viewers see during the interruption.
