For most YouTube Live streams, set bitrate mode to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Choose a bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate using YouTube’s live recommendations. YouTube’s live guidance does not specify one required H.264 profile or universal encoder preset; it does list advanced H.264 settings such as progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.

Recommended YouTube Live encoder settings at a glance

Setting Recommended starting point
Bitrate mode CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds
H.264 advanced settings Progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC; use square pixels and Rec. 709 for SDR
H.264 profile YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not specify a required profile
Encoder preset No universal preset is specified; preset names and effects depend on the encoder
Transport RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS

These are live-ingest settings, not upload-file settings. See YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full codec-specific tables and requirements.

Choose a bitrate for resolution and frame rate

The table shows YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingestion bitrates. The minimum is a lower bound in YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be stable. If your upload connection cannot sustain the recommended rate with room for normal variation, choose a lower resolution or frame rate rather than forcing an unreliable stream.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
2160p (4K), 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are YouTube’s configuration recommendations, not independent benchmark results. YouTube also publishes separate minimum and recommended values for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; do not apply the H.264 values to those codecs. Check the current official table for the codec you actually select, then run a speed test and leave capacity beyond the video bitrate for audio and connection fluctuations.

Set CBR and the keyframe interval

CBR controls the bitrate mode, not the bitrate value

Select CBR in the encoder’s rate-control or bitrate-mode setting, then enter a suitable bitrate from the table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. CBR does not tell you which number to use. YouTube says it detects encoder settings and transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers.

Use a 2-second keyframe interval

Set keyframe frequency or interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. Some encoders express this as a time interval; others use a keyframe distance in frames. If the interface asks for frames, convert using your frame rate—for example, at 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames.

H.264 profile and encoder preset: what YouTube actually requires

Profile

YouTube’s live encoder page does not name a required H.264 profile. It lists advanced properties including progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. If your encoder exposes profile options, do not treat “High” as a YouTube Live mandate based on upload guidance alone.

YouTube’s separate recommended upload encoding settings include H.264 High Profile and variable bitrate for uploaded video files. Those recommendations concern uploads, not proof of a live-stream requirement.

Preset

YouTube does not prescribe a universal software-encoder preset such as a particular speed or quality mode. Presets are implementation-specific and trade processing load against encoding behavior. Use a preset your encoder can sustain without dropped frames, meet YouTube’s live requirements, and test the result; avoid claiming a named preset is required unless the documentation for your specific encoder says so.

Codec, transport, audio, and picture settings

Codec and dynamic range

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Your encoder must expose the codec and controls you need, and your source material and connection must support the resolution and frame rate reliably. The official guidance does not establish a universal quality ranking among these codecs. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR.

  • Scan and pixels: Use progressive scan and square pixels.
  • H.264 advanced properties: Two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
  • SDR color: Rec. 709.

Audio

YouTube lists AAC and MP3 audio codecs. Its recommended audio settings are 128 Kbps for stereo at 44.1 kHz, or 384 Kbps for 5.1 at 48 kHz. 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Confirm that the selected encoder and audio interface can provide the channel layout and sample rate you intend to send.

Configure and test the stream before going live

  1. Choose the output: Decide the codec, resolution, frame rate, SDR or HDR, and audio layout based on your source and reliable upload capacity.
  2. Set the encoder: Select CBR, the appropriate codec-specific bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, progressive scan, and the applicable picture and audio settings above.
  3. Connect to YouTube: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream key into your encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password; do not show or share it publicly.
  4. Use RTMPS where available: Select YouTube’s secure ingest option in the encoder’s server or protocol settings.
  5. Run a representative test: Test with audio and movement similar to the planned event. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  6. Check stream health: Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the encoder’s dropped-frame or performance warnings. If the feed is unstable, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again.

YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders; an encoder setup does not inherently require dedicated hardware. Its setup overview is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Common setting problems and fixes

  • Stream health warns about bitrate or connection: The upload path may not sustain the configured rate. Run a speed test, lower the bitrate, or step down resolution or frame rate, then retest.
  • Keyframes are too far apart: Set the encoder interval to two seconds and verify whether the field expects seconds or frames.
  • Encoder overload or dropped frames: Try a less demanding encoder preset or lower resolution/frame rate. YouTube does not mandate a single preset, so use one the specific software or hardware can sustain.
  • Wrong profile assumption: High Profile appears in YouTube’s upload-file recommendations, not as a specified YouTube Live profile requirement. Check the live requirements and the encoder’s own documentation instead.
  • Wrong bitrate table: The values above are for H.264. If streaming AV1 or H.265/HEVC, use YouTube’s corresponding live table rather than reusing H.264 figures.
  • HDR incompatibility: For HDR over RTMP(S), use H.265 as YouTube recommends; AV1 is not supported for HDR.
  • Audio format mismatch: Check codec, sample rate, bitrate, and channel layout; for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC.
