If YouTube removed your live stream over a Hindi song, first check whether the notice says copyright removal and a strike, or only a Content ID claim. A counter notification is a legal request—not a general-purpose appeal—and is appropriate only if you genuinely believe the removal was mistaken, the material was misidentified, or a copyright exception plausibly applies. If you cannot support that position, you can ask the claimant to retract the request or complete Copyright School and wait for the strike to expire.
First, confirm whether it is a claim or a strike
Open YouTube Studio and read the exact notice, then check the enforcement email. The distinction determines which process applies:
- Content ID claim: YouTube may monetize, track, or block a video. You can dispute or appeal a claim through the claim process, but that is not the same as filing a counter notification after removal. See YouTube’s guidance on appealing a copyright claim.
- Copyright removal request: This is a legal request to remove content. If YouTube acts on it, the content may be removed and the channel may receive a copyright strike. The separate copyright removal request process explains the removal stage.
- Community Guidelines strike: This is a different enforcement process. Do not assume a notice is about copyright just because it arrived after a music stream; verify the stated policy and action.
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. A match can interrupt or terminate an active stream. If the active stream is removed for copyright, the channel can receive a strike and lose live-streaming access for seven days. The interruption itself and a formal removal request are not necessarily the same event, so check whether a removal and strike actually followed. Preserve the facts before responding
Save the notice and email, and write down the claimant’s name, the song and recording identified, the relevant stream segment, and the action YouTube took. Keep any licence, written permission, performance agreement, and related correspondence. Check whether the permission covers the relevant territory, platform, live communication or public performance, and any archived recording—not merely a different use of the music.

Permission may not prevent an automated live-stream interruption. YouTube warns that even licensed third-party content can trigger one unless the rights owner has added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. If that may have happened, contact the rights owner about the allowlist as well as reviewing the actual removal notice.
- Crediting the artist, buying a consumer music subscription, using a short excerpt, or writing “no copyright intended” does not by itself establish permission to livestream the song.
- Do not claim ownership, invent a licence, or describe a permission more broadly than its terms allow.
- A Hindi song may involve separate rights in the musical and literary composition and in the sound recording. The claimant named in your notice may be asserting rights in one or more of these; do not assume they lack rights without evidence.
Choose among the three response routes

When a counter notification may be appropriate
YouTube defines a counter notification as “a legal request to reinstate content that was removed due to a copyright removal request.” It is not a way to contest an ordinary Content ID claim, and it should not be filed just because you disagree with the claimant or want a strike removed. You need a genuine basis to believe the removal was mistaken or that a copyright exception applies to the particular use.

Consider whether you can substantiate the relevant facts: for example, whether you had permission covering the actual stream, whether YouTube identified the wrong material, or whether the circumstances plausibly fall within a copyright exception. An exception is not established merely because the stream involved commentary or used a short portion. If you are uncertain about the rights, the applicable licence, or the legal consequences of filing, consult a qualified Indian copyright lawyer before submitting.

YouTube says the original uploader should submit the counter notification, though an authorized representative, such as an attorney, may submit it on the uploader’s behalf. The required information is shared with the claimant. False information or misuse may have account or legal consequences. Review YouTube’s current counter notification instructions and the form shown in your account before proceeding.

What happens after YouTube forwards it
After forwarding the counter notification, YouTube gives the claimant 10 US working days to provide evidence of legal action. If legal action is pending, the content remains removed. If the claimant does not provide the required evidence within that period, YouTube says it restores the content and removes the strike. Filing does not guarantee restoration; follow the status shown in Studio and YouTube’s current instructions.
How to ask for a retraction or wait for expiry
Request a retraction
Use the claimant information in Studio to contact the person or organization that submitted the removal request. Keep the message factual: identify the stream and notice, explain the basis for asking for withdrawal, and include relevant permission or other supporting information if you have it. A request for retraction is not the same as a counter notification, and the claimant is not required to agree.

Complete Copyright School and wait
YouTube says a copyright strike may expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School, subject to its strike conditions. Expiry does not reinstate the removed stream. YouTube also says three copyright strikes within 90 days may subject the channel and associated channels to termination, so review all active strikes rather than treating this notice in isolation.
If the removal has not taken effect and YouTube sent a scheduled-removal notice, its guidance describes a separate seven-day window to act before removal and a strike. Once removal has taken effect, do not assume deleting the material will clear the strike; read the exact notice and available options.

What Indian copyright law does—and does not—establish
The Government of India’s India Code record identifies the Copyright Act, 1957 as Central Act 14 of 1957, enacted on 4 June 1957 and enforced from 21 January 1958. Under Section 51, exercising an exclusive right without a licence or contrary to its conditions can constitute infringement. Section 52(1)(a) provides for fair dealing with a work (other than a computer program) for listed purposes, including private or personal use, criticism or review, and reporting current events. See the statutory text and the India Code Act record.
Those provisions do not create blanket permission to play a Hindi song on a livestream, nor do they make every commentary stream or short excerpt fair dealing. Whether an exception applies depends on the facts and the rights involved. The specific song’s ownership, your licence, the stream context, and the likely outcome cannot be determined from the fact that the song is Hindi or that it appeared in a live broadcast.
Common problems and what to check
- You only see a Content ID claim: Use the claim’s own dispute or appeal route; do not submit a counter notification unless there has been a copyright removal request and removal.
- The live stream stopped, but you cannot find a strike: Check Studio and the enforcement email for a formal removal request and the action taken. A detected match or interruption alone does not establish that a strike was issued.
- You have a licence but the stream was interrupted: Check that its terms cover the actual live use, then ask the rights owner whether the channel is on the Content ID allowlist. A licence and allowlisting address different issues.
- You want to appeal but cannot identify a legal basis: Do not file a counter notification simply to test whether it works. Consider asking for a retraction or waiting for strike expiry instead.
- You received a scheduled-removal notice: Read its deadline and act within the stated window if you intend to use an available option; that pre-removal window is distinct from the post-forwarding counter-notification period.
