A normal-looking preview in your encoder does not prove YouTube is receiving a stable, correctly configured stream. Live Control Room checks the feed YouTube receives, and its warning may point to an ingest setting or outbound connection problem that is invisible in the local preview. The exact warning text—and when it appeared—is the best clue; the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.
What the warning means when your preview looks normal
The encoder preview shows what your computer is producing. YouTube’s stream-health indicator evaluates what reaches YouTube. Those can differ: the local picture may look fine even if the stream sent over the network has an unsupported setting, unstable connection, or another issue YouTube identifies.
Live Control Room displays timestamped errors and guidance. YouTube classifies red errors as critical; they may prevent an event from starting or cause problems for viewers. Yellow errors are moderate and can degrade stream quality. Unfixed errors continue to appear. The color signals severity, but the full message is more useful for diagnosing the cause. YouTube’s stream-health guidance explains the indicator and error messages.
Start with the exact warning
- Copy the complete warning text. Record its timestamp and whether it appeared during setup or after going live. Do not diagnose the problem from the warning color alone.
- Identify what the message names. A warning about bitrate, keyframes, or format points toward encoder configuration. A connection-related message calls for checking the outbound connection.
- Compare it with your stream configuration. Note the encoder, protocol, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Use the values for your actual codec and video mode rather than applying a universal bitrate.
Check encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance
For RTMP or RTMPS streams, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, and AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Confirm the settings in the encoder that is sending the stream, not just in a saved profile or a different scene.

- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. These examples are recommendations from YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026—not universal targets:
| Video mode | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
Use the applicable row only if you are streaming H.264 at that resolution and frame rate. For another codec or video mode, consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and match the warning to the relevant setting.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Find out whether the issue is local or on the way to YouTube
If your encoder preview or local recording is also wrong
Check the sources routed into the encoder, the encoder’s own error messages, and CPU load. Review a local recording or archive, if available, to see whether it contains the same picture or sound problem. If those checks do not reveal the cause, YouTube suggests trying another encoder.
If the local output looks and sounds healthy
Test the outbound internet connection. A healthy encoder preview cannot rule out trouble between your computer and YouTube’s ingest servers. Measure upload capacity and stability rather than relying on download speed. If a connection test identifies a problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Leave upload headroom and test under realistic conditions
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Compare that margin with the stream’s bitrate and the upload capacity available while the stream is running; a speed test at another time may not reflect the connection during a broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips also emphasize checking outbound capacity.
Before a future event, test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, then watch the health messages while the test is live. YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube Help
