When YouTube provides chat replay for an archived live stream, viewers can watch messages appear alongside the video at roughly the points when they were posted during the broadcast. But a 24/7 stream is not guaranteed to become a complete archive: YouTube says a stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Whether chat is visible depends on the particular video, its settings, and how you are watching it.
What chat replay looks like on an archived gaming stream
On an eligible archive, chat replay accompanies the video and reflects the messages as they appeared during the live broadcast. It is different from comments: comments are posted below the video after the stream, while replayed chat belongs to the live session. Top chat and Live chat can show different messages
Top chat filters messages using signals YouTube considers relevant; Live chat is unfiltered. If the replay seems to omit messages, check which display mode is selected before concluding that the messages were never sent. YouTube Help: learn about live chat.
Use the YouTube watch page
YouTube’s live-chat guidance describes chat on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. An embedded video may therefore lack the chat surface you expect. Open the stream’s YouTube watch page to check for chat or replay. YouTube Help: learn about live chat.

Why a 24/7 stream may have no complete archive
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a platform caveat, not a prediction that every long broadcast will fail: check the channel for the particular archive rather than assuming a full day of video exists. Live DVR is not the same as an archive
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while a stream is live. YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This limitation concerns live playback controls; it is separate from whether a completed archive exists and whether that archive has chat replay. YouTube Help: use DVR on live streams.

Reasons an existing archive may not show chat replay
- The creator turned replay off. Chat replay is enabled by default according to YouTube Help, but the creator can disable it in the archive’s customization settings. YouTube Help: moderate live chat.
- The stream was edited in YouTube’s video editor. YouTube says edited streams will not have chat replay. YouTube Help: moderate live chat.
- The audience is set as Made for Kids. YouTube says live chat and chat replay are disabled for this audience setting. YouTube Help: moderate live chat.
- No suitable archive was captured. For a broadcast over 12 hours, YouTube says an archive may not be captured at all. Without an archive, there is no completed video alongside which to replay chat. YouTube Help: archive live streams.
How to check what happened to a particular stream
- Open the stream on its YouTube watch page. This is the relevant place to check YouTube’s live-chat surface; an embedded player may not show it.
- Check whether an archive exists. If the broadcast ran longer than 12 hours, do not assume YouTube captured the full stream.
- Look for chat replay alongside the archived video. If it is available, messages should appear in relation to the points in the broadcast when they were posted.
- Check the chat display mode. Compare Top chat with Live chat, keeping in mind that Top chat filters messages and Live chat does not.
- Consider the video’s settings and history. A Made for Kids setting, editing in YouTube’s video editor, or the creator’s choice to turn replay off can explain why replay is absent.
