If YouTube Live is warning that your bitrate is too high—or your stream is dropping frames—lower both the encoder bitrate and the video resolution, then test again over the actual Jio hotspot. Start with H.264 at 480p30 and 4 Mbps as a test setting, not a guaranteed Jio-specific preset. A speed test is only a snapshot; a representative test stream and YouTube’s stream-health indicators are the better checks.
First, identify what “bitrate too high” means
Your encoder’s configured bitrate is the amount it tries to send; your hotspot’s upload capacity is what the connection can sustain at that moment. If the configured bitrate exceeds the available capacity, the encoder may report dropped frames or YouTube may show stream-health warnings. A momentary speed-test result does not guarantee the same upload capacity throughout a broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing upload speed, choosing settings reliable for the available connection, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health during the event. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance and its stream-health troubleshooting guidance.

Bitrate and resolution settings to try
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations distinguish codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not measured Jio hotspot speeds or guaranteed minimums for your connection.

| Video setting | H.264 recommended bitrate | H.264 minimum listed by YouTube | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
Source for the table: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions,” accessed 2026. The minimum entries are not the recommended settings, and neither column says what a particular Jio connection can sustain.
A practical starting point
- Try H.264, 480p at 30 fps, 4 Mbps.
- If that remains unstable, try H.264, 360p at 30 fps, initially at 4 Mbps; lower the configured bitrate further and retest if needed.
- If the connection proves stable and you prefer more detail or smoother motion, test 720p. YouTube lists 8 Mbps as its H.264 recommendation for both 720p30 and 720p60, but that is not a promise your hotspot can carry it.
Reducing resolution lowers image detail; reducing frame rate can make motion less smooth; reducing bitrate eases upload demand. On a variable mobile connection, adjust these together as needed rather than assuming a single lower bitrate will solve every problem.

Change the encoder settings and verify the result
- Check the connection under real conditions. Connect the streaming computer to the Jio hotspot and run an upload speed test near the place and time you plan to broadcast. Repeat it if results vary. Stop other uploads and cloud backups on the computer and devices sharing the phone connection, then test again.
- Lower output quality in your encoder. Set H.264, 480p, 30 fps, and 4 Mbps as an initial test. If the test stream is still unstable, lower bitrate and retest; move to 360p30 if necessary. Do not treat YouTube’s recommendation as a connection guarantee.
- Set rate control and keyframes. For H.264, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and allows a maximum of four seconds. Its live guidance also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, with RTMP/RTMPS streaming; use the options your encoder and workflow support.
- Test with representative content. Before the real broadcast, send a test with similar motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream. Confirm the encoder is not dropping frames and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Monitor during the broadcast. Watch stream health as the event runs. If warnings or dropped frames appear, reduce bitrate and, if needed, resolution or frame rate. A test in different conditions may not reflect the connection at broadcast time.
YouTube detects the encoder’s selected settings and transcodes a live stream into multiple playback formats. Manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key when manual settings are enabled in the Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder settings page for the current configuration details.

Try USB tethering if Wi-Fi between the phone and computer is unstable
If the phone-to-computer Wi-Fi hotspot connection is unreliable, try Android USB tethering with a compatible data cable. Android documents the option in its tethering and hotspot instructions. This can help test the local link between phone and computer; it cannot increase the upload capacity of the mobile network itself.

Retest when the cellular connection is weak or changing
If the phone’s cellular upload capacity varies or is too low, lowering encoder settings may help only up to a point. Test at another time or location. Jio’s public help and support pages provide a route for plan and account questions. Check with Jio directly for your plan’s eligibility, data allowance, or hotspot terms; a universal Jio 5G hotspot speed or cap is not established here.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder says bitrate is too high, or dropped frames appear | Configured bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity; other devices may be using the hotspot. | Stop competing uploads, lower bitrate, and retest at 480p30 or 360p30. |
| A speed test looks adequate, but the live test is unstable | The speed test is a snapshot and may not match sustained performance during a stream. | Repeat the test near broadcast time and judge settings by a representative test stream and YouTube stream health. |
| Wi-Fi hotspot connection between phone and computer cuts out | The local wireless link may be unstable, separate from cellular upload capacity. | Test Android USB tethering. It does not raise the mobile network’s available upload capacity. |
| Stream remains unstable at lower settings | The cellular upload may be weak or variable, or the connection may be affected by competing use. | Retest at another time or place, check YouTube stream health, and contact Jio about account-specific plan questions. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded video rather than a live camera broadcast, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
