For a 720p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, set the video bitrate to 8 Mbps with H.264 or 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. YouTube lists lower minimums of 3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Prerecorded footage uses the same settings guidance: choose based on the stream’s output resolution, frame rate, and codec—not whether the source was recorded earlier.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrate for 720p at 30 fps
YouTube’s English live encoder guidance gives these ingest settings for 720p at 30 frames per second. The recommended bitrate is the rate sent to YouTube by the encoder; it is not a guarantee that viewers will receive video at that same bitrate, because YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer formats. Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance before a broadcast, since these recommendations can change.
| Video codec | Listed minimum | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Use the recommended figure when your encoder and upload connection can sustain it reliably. The minimum is a lower listed option, not a promise of equivalent picture quality or stability. If your encoder only supports H.264, use the H.264 row rather than selecting a bitrate based on another codec.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes prerecorded video need a different bitrate?
No. “Prerecorded” describes the source material, not a separate YouTube Live ingest category. A prerecorded video sent as a live stream should use the row for the output resolution, frame rate, and codec being sent to YouTube. If the video or encoder output is not actually 720p at 30 fps, use the matching resolution and frame-rate guidance instead.

Set the other encoder settings
Bitrate is only one part of a stable stream. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. It recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for ingest. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options; confirm that your encoder and stream configuration support the codec you select.
- Resolution and frame rate: Set the encoder output to 720p at 30 fps if that is the intended stream format.
- Bitrate: Choose 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265/HEVC as the recommended setting.
- Rate control: Select CBR.
- Keyframes: Set an interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Ingest protocol: Choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it and YouTube offers it for the stream.
YouTube Live Control Room can automatically detect encoder settings. Manual resolution selection is associated with using a custom stream key and enabling manual settings. The exact controls vary by encoder, so consult its documentation for the relevant fields.

Check upload capacity and test before going live
Your upload connection must carry the full outbound stream bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom; measure upload capacity rather than relying on download speed. If you send primary and backup streams, account for both streams as well as that margin. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the intended stream values.
- Check the available upload bandwidth and leave approximately 20% headroom above the total outbound stream bitrate.
- Run a test stream before the event using similar audio and motion to the prerecorded video.
- During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health and encoder messages, and correct any warnings before relying on the stream.
YouTube’s guidance is to test before starting a live stream. A test using representative audio and motion can expose problems that a static image or silent clip may not reveal.

Troubleshooting bitrate and stream problems
- Frequent dropped frames or unstable ingest: Check upload capacity and whether the connection has the recommended headroom. Confirm total outbound bandwidth includes any backup stream. If needed, test a lower bitrate that remains within YouTube’s listed minimum for the codec.
- Encoder or Live Control Room reports a settings mismatch: Verify the actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR setting, and keyframe interval. Use a compatible codec and check the stream’s manual settings if you selected resolution manually.
- Video looks poor despite a stable stream: Confirm the encoder is sending 720p at 30 fps and that you selected the recommendation for its codec. The ingest bitrate does not determine the exact rendition every viewer receives, since YouTube transcodes live streams.
- Stream works during a test but fails under normal use: Repeat the test with similar audio and motion and monitor stream health and encoder messages during the broadcast. A different clip or network load can change the result.
Or let it run in the cloud
