Its published minimums are 3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are encoder video-bitrate settings—not guarantees that a 4G connection in India can sustain them. Measure upload performance where and when you plan to stream, choose a rate it can maintain reliably, and check YouTube’s stream health while live.
Which bitrate should you use for 720p at 30 fps?
Choose the figure for the codec selected in your encoder. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these settings for 720p at 30 fps:

These are video bitrates for live encoder input, not total internet-speed targets. Treat the recommended value as a starting reference only if your measured upload can sustain it. A minimum is not a promise of a stable broadcast. If your 4G upload fluctuates, using a lower encoder bitrate that remains reliable may be preferable to aiming for the recommendation and dropping frames. YouTube does not specify a universal 4G bitrate or a particular headroom percentage.
Use the YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate table for the current codec-specific values.

Why “4G in India” does not determine one bitrate
The label 4G does not tell you the upload capacity available to your encoder at a particular place and time. Carrier, coverage, network congestion, device, and competing activity on the connection can all affect the result. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish an India-wide 4G upload-speed statistic, so there is no evidence-based single bitrate that works for every Indian creator.
Measure upload, not just download speed. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth (download) is often greater than outbound (upload), and other people or devices using the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. See YouTube’s live filming tips.

Test the connection and choose a dependable setting
- Test at the streaming location. Run a speed test that measures upload on the phone or hotspot you will use. YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate.
- Test under representative conditions. Try at a time and in a location like the planned broadcast, with similar audio and motion. A quiet test may not represent a crowded or busy-network period.
- Set the encoder to the chosen codec’s rate. If using H.264, compare the measured, sustained upload with the 8 Mbps recommendation; if using AV1 or H.265, use 6 Mbps as its reference. When the connection varies, lower the video bitrate until the test is dependable rather than treating the minimum as a stability guarantee.
- Reduce competing traffic. Ask others to avoid heavy network use during the broadcast, and pause unnecessary uploads or downloads on devices sharing the connection.
- Run a real pre-stream test and monitor the broadcast. Include audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Once live, watch YouTube’s stream health and messages; if they indicate instability, reduce the encoder bitrate and reassess.
Encoder settings beyond bitrate
YouTube’s live guidance also lists these settings for encoder delivery:
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: stereo at 128 Kbps.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery.
Configure the stream key and encoder according to the platform and software you use. The cited settings do not make an unstable mobile uplink reliable; verify stream health during a test rather than relying on configuration alone. Full settings are in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Do not use prerecorded-upload bitrate for a live stream
YouTube’s separate prerecorded SDR upload table lists 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates. That figure applies to uploading a video file, not to live encoder input. For a 720p30 broadcast, use the live table and its codec-specific values above. The upload table is available in YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

A compatible, unlocked 4G LTE hotspot or portable Wi-Fi router can be an option if you need connectivity separate from your phone. Check compatibility with your carrier and test upload performance locally before depending on it. A separate device cannot fix poor coverage or guarantee a particular bitrate; the same location-and-time testing still matters.
