For a 480p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends 4 Mbps with H.264 or 3 Mbps with AV1/H.265. The listed minimums are 0.4 Mbps and 0.3 Mbps, respectively, but a minimum is not a promise of a stable stream on your broadband connection. Set your encoder for the codec it actually uses, include audio in your total bitrate, and test your sustained upload before going live.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrate for 480p
YouTube’s live encoder settings distinguish the recommended bitrate from the minimum, and the values depend on the codec. The figures below are for 480p at 30 fps; they are YouTube ingestion settings, not a guarantee of real-world performance. YouTube’s live encoder settings list these values.
| Codec | Recommended video bitrate | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 3 Mbps | 0.3 Mbps |
| H.264 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
Use the recommendation for the codec your encoder is sending. Do not treat the lower minimum as a suitable everyday target: it is a listed floor, not evidence that a particular connection will remain stable at that rate. Nor should these live-stream settings be confused with YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval for live encoding, and says not to exceed four seconds. Set the video bitrate according to the applicable codec row above. Your connection must carry the total outgoing stream bitrate, including audio—not just the video setting. YouTube states that the total bitrate cannot exceed the available upload bandwidth. Its encoder settings guidance covers the encoder parameters; YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth constraint.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
- Check which codec your streaming software or hardware encoder will use. AV1/H.265’s listed recommendation is lower than H.264’s, but the figures do not establish that your device supports either codec or that changing codecs will guarantee stability or data savings.
- Allow for audio in addition to video, as well as normal variation in your connection. Available upload bandwidth should exceed the total stream bitrate; a single speed-test result does not establish that upload capacity will be sustained throughout a broadcast.
- If the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen stream, lower the resolution rather than assuming the minimum bitrate will solve the problem.
Estimate data use per hour
A sustained 1 Mbps uses about 0.45 decimal GB in one hour before overhead. This is a unit-conversion estimate: Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte ÷ 1,000 MB per decimal GB. Multiply the total sustained bitrate, including audio, by about 0.45 to estimate decimal GB per hour.
| Sustained total bitrate | Approximate data per hour before overhead |
|---|---|
| 0.4 Mbps | 0.18 GB |
| 3 Mbps | 1.35 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 1.8 GB |
The examples are arithmetic estimates, not YouTube measurements or a provider’s metered total. Actual usage can differ with the total bitrate and overhead. Check your own Indian broadband plan for any data allowance, fair-use policy, or other limit; those terms vary by provider and plan.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Test before going live, then monitor stream health
- Check sustained upload performance. Test the connection you will use for the broadcast, ideally at the time and location you plan to stream. Compare its sustained upload capacity with the complete outgoing bitrate, including audio—not just the video number.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test stream. YouTube advises testing before going live, with audio and movement similar to the planned event. This helps reveal issues that a quiet or static test may miss. See YouTube’s live setup guidance.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. Monitor them during the test and broadcast. If the connection cannot sustain the selected stream, reduce the resolution or adjust the stream settings, then test again. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and offers troubleshooting guidance for live-stream errors.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video looping on YouTube, rather than stream a live camera or event, StreamNeo runs the broadcast from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
