For a 1080p, 24fps YouTube Live stream, use YouTube’s 1080p/30fps live-encoder bitrate range as a starting reference—not as an exact 24fps specification. The current table recommends 5–14 Mbps for H.264 and 4–10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 30fps. Use constant bitrate (CBR), set keyframes every two seconds, and test with representative footage before broadcasting. YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate for 1080p/24fps or film playlists.

What bitrate should you use for 1080p at 24fps?

YouTube’s live-encoder table has 1080p entries for 30fps and 60fps, but not 24fps. The nearest listed setting is 1080p/30fps, so use its recommendation as a practical starting point while recognizing that it is an extrapolation, not a published 24fps target.

Live video codec Closest listed setting Minimum listed bitrate Recommended range
H.264 1080p at 30fps 5 Mbps 5–14 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p at 30fps 4 Mbps 4–10 Mbps

These are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations, accessed in 2026. They are not a film-specific adjustment. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently, then check stream health during a test and broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists the current codec-specific ranges.

Why not use the 1080p upload figure?

YouTube separately recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR uploads at standard frame rates, including 24, 25, and 30fps. That number applies to uploaded videos, not live encoding. For a live stream, refer to the live table above rather than treating the upload recommendation as a live bitrate target.

Recommended encoder settings for a film playlist

  • Resolution and frame rate: Send 1080p at 24fps if that is how the prepared footage was made and your encoder can deliver it reliably. YouTube allows live streaming up to 60fps, but its table does not give a separate 24fps bitrate.
  • Video bitrate: Start with the relevant codec’s 1080p/30fps range in the table. The 24fps figure is not explicitly specified by YouTube.
  • Rate control: Use CBR.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its listed video codec options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
  • Audio: Use AAC or MP3. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC only.

Exact control names and where they appear vary by encoder. Apply the values in that encoder’s live-output settings, then verify the incoming signal in YouTube’s live control room.

Test the bitrate against your connection and footage

  1. Check upload capacity. Confirm that your connection can sustain the selected video bitrate, with room for audio and normal network variation. A rate that repeatedly approaches the connection’s limit can lead to an unstable stream.
  2. Run a private or unlisted test where possible. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio setup, and delivery path planned for the broadcast.
  3. Use representative material. Include audio and moving footage similar to the film playlist. YouTube Help advises testing with similar sound and movement before going live.
  4. Check stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and the broadcast. If the connection cannot hold the selected rate, lower it to a stable value within the applicable codec guidance and test again.

Film scenes may contain less motion than sports or gaming, but YouTube does not publish a special bitrate discount for film content. A title’s frame rate alone is not enough to establish the best bitrate for every encoder, source, and internet connection.

Choose a latency setting for the kind of broadcast

Latency affects the delay between the live feed and what viewers see. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but it reduces playback buffer and may increase buffering. If a film playlist has little audience interaction, minimizing delay may matter less than smooth playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Low latency: YouTube says most viewers experience under 10 seconds of latency.
  • Ultra-low latency: YouTube says most viewers experience under five seconds, but buffering risk is higher.
  • 4K limitation: YouTube’s low- and ultra-low-latency options do not support 4K.

These are typical viewer latency figures in YouTube’s guidance, not guarantees for every viewer or network. See YouTube’s explanation of live-stream latency when choosing a mode.

Confirm you have rights to rebroadcast every film

A video being public on YouTube, or appearing in a playlist, does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it as a live stream. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it.

If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A licence alone may not prevent interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams describes this platform handling; it is not a jurisdiction-specific legal determination.

Common bitrate and stream problems

  • Unstable stream or poor stream health: The selected bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain consistently. Test upload capacity, reduce the bitrate to a stable setting in the relevant codec range, and check stream health again.
  • Bitrate advice conflicts between live and upload pages: The 8 Mbps figure for 1080p SDR at 24, 25, or 30fps is upload guidance. For live video, use the live-encoder table’s nearest 1080p/30fps recommendation.
  • Keyframe setting is rejected or does not match guidance: Set a two-second interval and ensure it does not exceed four seconds.
  • Live stream interrupted after a copyright match: Check YouTube’s copyright notice and confirm that the playlist is authorized for live rebroadcast. If licensed, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel in Content ID.
  • Viewers report buffering with low latency: Lower latency trades buffer for reduced delay. Consider normal latency if interaction does not require a near-real-time response.
