To add ad cue points to a YouTube live stream, enable monetization in YouTube Studio, choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls, then use Live Control Room to insert breaks if you chose manual. A cue point is only an opportunity for YouTube to serve an ad—not a promise that an ad will appear or generate revenue.
Before adding live ad breaks
Your channel must be eligible for monetization, and monetization must be enabled for the stream. To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams, YouTube also requires you to accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. Check YouTube’s monetization options and prerequisites for the applicable terms.
Ad suitability rules can limit monetization. Even when a stream is monetized and a break is set, YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads; some viewers may see an ad at a different time, while others may not see one at all. Viewers who are not served an ad can continue watching. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Turn on monetization and choose a mid-roll setting
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream workflow or schedule one from Manage.
- Open Edit > Monetization.
- Set Monetization to On.
- Choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual for live mid-rolls, then save or apply the setting as prompted.
Labels and placement can differ by locale, and YouTube may change the interface, so a channel may not show every option in exactly the same place.

Choose the right live ad mode

YouTube reported an average “over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour” when comparing channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads with channels that did not. The comparison covered channels across 207 countries and was reported by YouTube in January 2024. It is a group-level comparison, not an earnings forecast for your channel or proof that turning the feature on will cause a specific result. Individual ad slots still may not serve. Insert a manual ad break while live
- Start or resume the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room.
- When you reach a suitable pause, use the mid-roll ad control in Live Control Room to insert a break. Check the on-screen control available to your channel; interface labels can vary.
- Wait for the break to finish before continuing a segment that viewers need to see in full. The break creates an opportunity for ad delivery, not a guaranteed ad for every viewer.
If you want a physical button-based workflow, YouTube also identifies a YouTube plugin for Elgato Stream Deck as an option for inserting ads. It is optional: Live Control Room supports the core workflow without a Stream Deck.

Protect important moments from automatic breaks
For automatic mode, Live Control Room’s Delay ads option pauses automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears in Live Control Room before automatic breaks resume, giving you notice to finish or pause a key moment. This feature does not suppress breaks you insert manually, so it is not a safeguard for manual mode.

Use the delay when a segment is especially difficult to interrupt, then let automatic scheduling resume when the moment has passed. YouTube’s live ad guidance describes the control and countdown.

Check whether live ads are contributing revenue
Use YouTube Analytics and apply the Live filter to review revenue from live streams and their replays. A cue point alone does not establish that an ad was served, and a stream’s monetization status does not mean every viewer received an ad. YouTube’s mid-roll explanation notes that ad systems weigh viewer experience, earnings, and advertiser value when deciding whether to fill a slot.
Troubleshoot missing or poorly timed breaks
- No monetization option or ad control: Confirm the channel’s monetization eligibility and that the Watch Page Monetization Module has been accepted for Watch Page ad and Premium revenue. Then confirm monetization is On for this stream.
- No manual mid-rolls appeared: Verify that you inserted a break in Live Control Room. Manual mode does not serve mid-rolls if no breaks are inserted.
- A cue point produced no ad: This can happen even when the cue is set correctly; ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, and delivery can differ among viewers.
- Automatic breaks interrupt a key segment: Use Delay ads before the moment begins. It pauses automatic breaks for 10 minutes; manual breaks are not suppressed by it.
- Scheduled breaks do not match the moment: Scheduled intervals are fixed at 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. Consider automatic mode for YouTube-selected breakpoints or manual mode when you need to choose the timing yourself.
