For a 720p YouTube Live stream, set H.264 to 8 Mbps or AV1/H.265 to 6 Mbps, use constant bitrate (CBR), and set a 2-second keyframe interval. Those are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings; the right settings do not, by themselves, give you permission to stream movie trailers. Confirm the rights to every trailer and included audio before going live.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 720p
YouTube’s live-encoder table gives the same bitrate recommendations for 720p at 30 and 60 frames per second. Use the figures for your selected codec, rather than YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploaded videos. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into viewer output formats. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance (accessed October 3, 2026) lists these values:
| Frame rate | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 60 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee of quality or a measure of audience preference. For a trailer presentation, 30 fps is a sensible starting point; choose 60 fps only when the source and production call for it. Match the encoder’s output to 1280×720 and the frame rate you intend to send.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio and your encoder
- Create or select the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. YouTube normally detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically. A custom stream key lets you choose resolution manually. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Enter the video settings. In the encoder, select 1280×720, your chosen frame rate, the codec-specific recommended bitrate from the table, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval. Settings names vary by encoder.
- Connect using RTMPS where available. RTMPS is YouTube’s secure extension to RTMP. Use the server address and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Studio; treat the key like a password and do not share it publicly. See YouTube’s stream connection guidance.
- Configure audio. YouTube supports AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced guidance recommends stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Check that the encoder is actually receiving the intended audio source and that the preview is not muted. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Check upload capacity. Run an upload-speed test on the connection you will use for the stream. YouTube recommends 20% headroom; the available upload bandwidth must cover the total stream bitrate, including audio, and upload speed may be lower than download speed. Details are in YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test before the scheduled broadcast. Test with audio and movement similar to the actual program. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any messages before and during the stream. YouTube’s live streaming guidance recommends testing ahead of time.
Trailer rights are separate from encoder settings
A stream can meet every technical requirement and still be unauthorized. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and may interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the content remains. For licensed trailers, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license without allowlisting may not prevent an interruption. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Confirm that you have the necessary rights to each trailer, its soundtrack, and any other included material before scheduling. YouTube’s general copyright guidance says permission or a qualifying copyright exception may provide a basis to use another party’s work, but no option guarantees avoiding a claim or strike; applicable law can vary by country or region. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.
Do you need a dedicated hardware encoder?
No. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders and says expensive equipment is not required to start. Choose an encoder based on whether it supports your codec and can sustain 720p at the intended frame rate and bitrate, the stability of your connection, your audio and video inputs, and whether your production needs dedicated hardware. Hardware may suit a production that needs particular inputs or dedicated encoding, but it is not a requirement for 720p and does not provide content rights. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Can a Telugu trailer playlist automatically become a live broadcast?
The settings above apply when an encoder is sending a live signal to YouTube. They do not establish that a YouTube playlist can automatically be converted into a live broadcast. If you plan to play trailers continuously, make sure your streaming method actually sends a live feed and that you have the necessary rights and any required Content ID allowlisting.
Troubleshoot common 720p stream problems
- Stream health reports bitrate or connection problems: Check the encoder’s outgoing bitrate and test the connection’s upload speed. Ensure the total bitrate fits within available upload capacity, retaining YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- The picture looks unstable or breaks up: Confirm the encoder is set to 1280×720, CBR, the recommended bitrate for its codec, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Check stream health messages and the Live Control Room preview.
- The stream is not using the expected resolution or frame rate: Verify the encoder output and the stream selected in YouTube Studio. YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically; if you need manual resolution selection, use a custom stream key.
- There is no audio or it sounds wrong: Verify the selected audio input, confirm AAC or MP3 is configured, and check the preview. YouTube’s advanced recommendation for stereo is 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps.
- The broadcast is replaced, interrupted, or terminated: Check for a third-party-content match in YouTube’s live notifications. Resolve the rights issue with the rights owner; if the trailers are licensed, ask whether the channel can be added to the Content ID allowlist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home. It keeps the uploaded video looping in the cloud, supports the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. You still need the rights to the trailer material. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
