If your YouTube gaming replay looks choppy when streamed with FFmpeg, first compare the local recording or output with YouTube’s stream preview. Choppy locally usually points to the source, frame-rate or timestamp handling, or encoding performance; smooth locally but choppy on YouTube points toward ingest settings, the upload path, or playback. The right fix depends on which side first shows the problem—not on adding a single FFmpeg option by default.
Find where the choppiness starts
Before changing your command, determine whether the replay is a media file or a live/capture input, and compare what FFmpeg produces locally with what appears in YouTube Studio and the YouTube player. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive when diagnosing poor stream quality (YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance).
- The local output is choppy: Start with the source footage, timestamps and frame-rate handling, then check whether the encoder can keep up.
- The local output is smooth but YouTube’s preview is choppy: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, ingest settings, and outbound connection.
- The preview is smooth but a viewer sees choppiness: Test playback on another connection and at another playback quality to distinguish an ingest problem from a viewer-side issue (YouTube playback troubleshooting).
Make one change at a time and compare the same section of gameplay. Fast movement is more revealing than a static menu.

For a replay file
When FFmpeg reads a media file that you want to play out as a live stream in real time, use -re (equivalent to -readrate 1) before the input it governs. This reads the input at its native frame rate instead of sending the file as fast as FFmpeg can process it. FFmpeg documents this behavior in its command-line documentation.

ffmpeg -re -i replay.mp4 [output options] "YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is a diagnostic pattern, not a complete universal command: the encoder, codec, output protocol, and options depend on your setup. FFmpeg options are order-sensitive. Place input options before the input they apply to, and check the documentation for your installed build with ffmpeg -version and the matching FFmpeg documentation.
For a live or capture input
Do not add -re automatically to an actual live input or capture device. FFmpeg cautions that rate-limiting a live source this way can cause packet loss. If your source is live, inspect its capture frame rate and timestamps and check the encoder’s throughput instead.

Inspect FFmpeg output and encoder load
Watch the FFmpeg console while the choppy section plays. Look for errors or warnings and whether processing speed falls behind the pace needed for the intended output. At the same time, check CPU load. YouTube recommends checking both encoder errors and CPU load, but there is no single CPU percentage that establishes a problem for every machine and encoder.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- If processing falls behind or errors appear during fast gameplay, test a less demanding encoding configuration—such as a lower output resolution or frame rate—and compare the local result.
- If the local result is already uneven before it reaches YouTube, inspect the source clip and how its frame rate and timestamps are handled.
- If the console and local output look clean, avoid changing encoder settings blindly; move on to the ingest and network checks.
Match the output to YouTube’s live settings
Check the actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe spacing against YouTube’s current live encoder settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate guidance for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a figure from a different setup.

| H.264 output example | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 livestream ingestion figures, accessed in 2026; they are not universal targets for other codecs or formats. If YouTube reports an error, use its specific wording. Its live encoder error guidance flags incorrect video settings and keyframe frequency; frame rate and keyframe interval are related, so confirm both the configured values and the dashboard’s reported issue.

If your local archive is smooth but YouTube’s preview or stream health indicates trouble, test the outbound connection and available upload capacity. A connection test can help identify whether the upload path is adequate for the chosen stream settings; YouTube recommends monitoring stream health rather than assuming the network is the cause (stream troubleshooting; monitor your live stream).

If the preview looks healthy but reports of choppiness come from viewers, ask whether playback changes on a different network or at a different quality. That helps separate a creator-side ingest issue from a viewer’s connection or playback conditions. A wired connection can be a reasonable way to test a more stable local network path, but it cannot fix choppy source footage, overloaded encoding, or incorrect frame-rate handling.

Run a controlled test before going live
- Choose a short replay section with motion and audio representative of the intended broadcast.
- Record or inspect the local output and note whether the same section is already choppy.
- Send a private or unlisted test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages alongside FFmpeg output and CPU load.
- Change one relevant setting at a time—pacing, encoding load, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval—then test the same section again.
- Keep the setting change only if it improves the affected stage without introducing new errors.
YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and monitoring the stream (live stream testing guidance). This is more useful than judging a static screen or changing several settings at once.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a recorded replay looping on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
