If a YouTube gaming replay gets a copyright claim for soundtrack music, open the video’s copyright details in YouTube Studio and check the claimant, matched track, time range, and effect on the video. If the match is valid, you can leave the claim, trim the segment, replace the music, or erase or mute the audio. Dispute only if you have a sound rights-based or legal reason, or the match is mistaken. Before saving an edit in Studio, download a copy if you may need the original: YouTube says Studio edits saved since June 2025 cannot be reverted.
Why a replay can get claimed after the stream ends
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects music, it may show a warning, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the content remains. A Content ID claim on an archived live stream is a separate event: YouTube says claims on the archive are made after the stream ends, if you choose to archive it. So a broadcast can finish normally and its replay still receive a claim afterward. A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request or a copyright strike. Check what the claim affects before choosing a remedy
- In YouTube Studio, open the replay’s copyright details. Review the claimant, the matched content, the time range, and the listed effect on the video.
- Decide what matters most: keeping the full replay’s sound and footage, clearing the claim, keeping the video available, or preserving the possibility of monetization.
- Download a copy before making or saving an edit if you need an untouched original. YouTube says edits saved in Studio Editor since June 2025 cannot be reverted. YouTube Help also describes Google Takeout as an option for obtaining a copy.
Choose an option for the existing claim
Leave the claim in place
If the match appears valid and you accept the listed effect—such as a viewing restriction or a change to monetization—you can leave the claim. Check the claim details to understand its effect on this video; do not assume every claim has the same consequence. See YouTube Help, Dispute a copyright claim.
Trim the claimed segment
Use YouTube Studio’s trim option to remove the relevant interval. The claim clears only if no claimed material remains. If the music appears in more than one place, removing only one interval may not be enough. See YouTube Help, Remove copyright-claimed content from videos.

Replace the claimed music
For an audio claim, YouTube Studio can replace the claimed music with a track from the YouTube Audio Library. The replacement needs to cover the full claimed interval; if any matched material remains, the claim may remain too. This option changes the replay’s soundtrack in that interval, so listen to the edited result before relying on it. See YouTube Help, Remove copyright-claimed content from videos.
Erase the song or mute the segment
Erasing the song may preserve game audio, dialogue, and effects, but it may not work well when the music is difficult to separate. Muting all audio in the claimed section is more likely to clear the claim, but it also removes game sounds and your commentary in that section. YouTube says a successful trim, replacement, or mute can automatically clear the claim. See YouTube Help, Remove copyright-claimed content from videos.

Dispute only with a defensible basis
YouTube lists having the necessary rights, a copyright exception, or a mistaken match as possible grounds to dispute. Giving credit, owning a copy of the game or song, or choosing not to monetize do not establish permission on their own. An ordinary dispute gives the claimant 30 days to respond, according to YouTube Help’s current dispute guidance; a publication year is not stated on that page. If the claimant rejects an appeal, they may submit a copyright removal request. If YouTube receives a valid request, the video is removed and the channel receives a copyright strike.

YouTube cannot decide whether a use is fair use. Its Fair use on YouTube guidance says automated Content ID cannot determine fair use because it is subjective and case-specific, and only courts can make that determination. A short music excerpt, commentary, or non-monetization is not automatic permission; YouTube also warns that even a few seconds of a popular song can affect monetization. If you are uncertain whether your basis is legally sound, YouTube recommends getting legal advice before disputing.

Check game and music rights separately
Permission to stream gameplay does not necessarily cover every recording heard in the game. YouTube’s Video game and software content guidance says monetization can depend on commercial-use rights granted by the game publisher. It also says extended gameplay without an appropriate license may not be accepted for monetization unless the creator’s step-by-step commentary is strictly tied to the action and provides instructional or educational value. Check the specific publisher’s current streaming policy and any separate license for music used in the game.
YouTube’s Content eligible for Content ID guidance defines original video game soundtracks as recordings created primarily for use in a game and says only the game publisher may deliver those soundtracks as valid Content ID references. That rule concerns who may submit references to Content ID; it does not give a streamer permission to use the soundtrack. Popular music licensed into a game is a separate rights question.

Reduce the chance of another soundtrack claim
- Check the game’s audio settings and publisher guidance for streamer-safe mode or a way to disable licensed music while retaining gameplay audio. Availability and controls vary by game.
- For music you add yourself, consider YouTube’s Audio Library, original music, Creator Music where available, or third-party music only after checking its license. YouTube’s Tips to find safe music cautions that a track being described online as “free,” or adding a credit line, does not by itself prevent a Content ID claim.
- If you licensed third-party content for a live stream, ask the rights owner whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a stream can still be interrupted without that allowlisting, even when you have a license.
