YouTube fan funding lets eligible creators earn directly from viewers through recurring channel memberships and one-time purchases called Supers. Memberships suit continuing perks; Super Chat and Super Stickers add paid interaction to eligible live chats and Premieres; Super Thanks lets viewers support eligible videos and Shorts. These tools are paid YouTube features, not crowdfunding or charitable donations, and meeting YouTube Partner Program (YPP) thresholds does not automatically unlock every feature.
What YouTube fan funding includes
YouTube describes fan funding as a way to earn extra income while connecting with viewers and building a community. Its core fan-funding features are channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. They differ in whether payment recurs, where the viewer interacts, and which content can receive a purchase.
Fan funding is not the same as crowdfunding or charitable donations. A viewer is buying a platform feature or membership, not making a tax-deductible contribution or donating through a fundraiser. YouTube Giving has separate rules and can be incompatible with some Supers.

Which fan-funding feature fits your channel?
- Choose memberships if you can consistently provide perks members value over time. Set realistic expectations: recurring payments work best when the benefits and delivery schedule are clear.
- Use Super Chat or Super Stickers when you host eligible live streams or Premieres and can acknowledge paid messages or reactions as part of the event. These are tied to live chat rather than general video viewing.
- Consider Super Thanks for eligible videos or Shorts that viewers may want to support after publication. It is not available during a live stream or Premiere, but may be available on the eligible archived long-form video afterward.
These formats can serve different parts of a channel; none guarantees a particular income. Availability depends on the creator, the viewer’s location and the specific content.

YPP thresholds are a starting point, not a guarantee
YouTube’s monetization overview lists an earlier YPP access tier with 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days. The listed features at that tier include memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping.
The overview also lists a higher tier of 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days. Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium are listed among the additional monetization features at this tier. Paid-ad-campaign views and watch time do not count toward these YPP thresholds, apart from qualifying follow-on views as described by YouTube.
These published counts can change. Check YouTube Studio’s Earn area and the current YouTube monetization overview before relying on a threshold or telling a creator they qualify. Even after a channel meets a YPP tier, feature-level eligibility, location, content restrictions, and applicable terms still apply.

Baseline requirements for fan funding
YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies state that a creator must be in YPP, be at least 18, and live in a location where the particular feature is available. The creator must also accept and follow the relevant Commerce Product Module or, for creators who accepted the earlier agreement, the Commerce Product Addendum. YouTube says individual features have additional rules and must be enabled separately in Studio or the Studio mobile app.
Content and location restrictions to check
Eligibility can differ by feature, channel, video, and country or region. YouTube’s feature availability pages publish changing location lists, so confirm the current list and the feature’s status in Studio rather than assuming a channel qualifies because a related feature is available.

YouTube lists the following as unavailable for Super Chat and Super Stickers:

The creator must also meet the location and policy requirements. Because these purchases appear in live chat, YouTube says the viewer’s channel name, profile picture, purchase amount, and Super Chat or Sticker are publicly visible.

Super Thanks has both channel-level and individual-video restrictions. A channel cannot be set as Made for Kids and must not have a significant number of ineligible or made-for-kids videos. YouTube also currently excludes some music channels under SRAV contracts.
An individual video or Short is ineligible if it is age-restricted, unlisted, private, made for kids, copyright-claimed, associated with a YouTube Giving fundraiser, or has comments turned off. Super Thanks is not available during a live stream or Premiere; an eligible archived long-form video may qualify afterward.

Terms, laws, and fundraisers
Creators must follow YouTube’s terms, Community Guidelines, channel monetization policies, relevant Commerce Product terms, and applicable laws. YouTube makes the creator responsible for understanding whether they may offer or receive these payments in their jurisdiction. Fundraising features have separate rules: for example, Super Chat and Stickers are unavailable on live streams using Live Chat Donations, and Super Thanks is unavailable on videos with Donations.

YouTube states that creators receive 70% of Super Thanks revenue recognized by Google after local sales tax and applicable iOS App Store fees are deducted. YouTube says it currently covers transaction costs, including credit-card fees. This share is specific to Super Thanks; it should not be assumed to apply to memberships, Super Chat, or Super Stickers without a current feature-specific source.
Super Thanks purchases are non-refundable according to YouTube’s buyer help. YouTube also gives combined viewer-side spending limits for Super Chats, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Gifts of up to $500 USD per day or $2,000 USD per week, or the equivalent in local currency; limits vary by country or region. These are viewer purchase limits, not a cap on a creator’s earnings, and the terms may change. Some YouTube purchases in the Android app may be billed through Google Play; YouTube says that changes the billing source, not the price or cost.

Other ways to earn on YouTube
YouTube Shopping is an adjacent monetization path, not a fan-funding feature. Eligible creators may be able to promote products from other brands and earn through YouTube Shopping. Availability and eligibility vary, so check YouTube’s current Shopping rules rather than assuming access from YPP membership alone.
Fan funding also depends on people being able to discover and watch your content, but a stream-running tool does not grant YPP access or make ineligible content eligible. Set up fan funding without overpromising
- Check YPP status and thresholds. In YouTube Studio, review the Earn area and the current eligibility shown for your channel. Treat general threshold figures as a gateway, not confirmation that every fan-funding feature is available.
- Check each feature separately. Review YouTube’s current Commerce Products policies and the eligibility and availability page for the relevant feature. Confirm your location, terms acceptance, and channel/content status.
- Enable only eligible features. Use YouTube Studio or its mobile app to turn on available features individually, following the prompts shown for your account.
- Match the feature to the experience. Explain what membership perks include and how often you expect to deliver them; use Super Chat or Stickers for eligible live chat or Premieres; and invite Super Thanks on eligible published videos or Shorts.
- Keep the viewer informed. Explain that purchases are platform payments, identify any perks you offer, and do not describe a Super as a charitable donation or imply a purchase guarantees a response, result, or special treatment.
Common eligibility problems and what to check
- A feature is missing from Studio: check YPP status, age and country eligibility, accepted Commerce Product terms, then the feature-specific policy. Recheck the current availability list because locations can differ by feature.
- Super Chat or Stickers do not appear on a stream: verify that the stream’s live chat and comments are on, and that the content is not age-restricted, unlisted, private, made for kids, or a YouTube Giving fundraiser.
- Super Thanks is unavailable on one upload: check whether comments are enabled and whether the content is age-restricted, unlisted, private, made for kids, copyright-claimed, or tied to a fundraiser. It cannot be used while the stream or Premiere is live.
- A channel qualifies at a YPP tier but cannot enable a particular feature: meeting the tier counts does not waive the feature’s own rules, terms, geographic coverage, or content restrictions. Check the relevant Studio status and policy page.
- A creator is unsure what a purchase means: distinguish a paid platform feature from a donation or fundraiser, and explain the visibility and benefit terms before viewers pay.
