YouTube fan funding lets eligible creators earn directly from viewers through one-time live-chat purchases or recurring channel memberships. Super Chat highlights a viewer’s message, Super Stickers add an animated image to live chat, and memberships provide ongoing channel-specific perks. To use these features, a creator generally needs to be in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), meet the age and location requirements, accept the applicable commerce terms, and enable the feature in YouTube Studio.

Super Chat and Super Stickers are available for eligible live streams and Premieres. Memberships follow a different payment pattern: viewers pay monthly for the perks a channel offers. Neither model is universally better; consider whether your audience is more likely to value a one-off interaction during a broadcast or ongoing member benefits. Who can use Super Chat, Stickers, and memberships?
YouTube’s commerce-product policy sets baseline requirements: the channel must be in YPP, the creator must be at least 18, and the feature must be available in the creator’s location. The creator must also accept the applicable Commerce Product Module or a previously accepted Commerce Product Addendum, follow the relevant terms and policies, and turn on each feature in YouTube Studio. Meeting a YPP threshold does not automatically guarantee access to every feature; check the individual feature requirements and the channel’s current eligibility in Studio.

YPP thresholds are not the same as feature access
As listed in YouTube Help’s monetization overview accessed in October 2026, the expanded YPP tier requires 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 qualifying public watch hours from long-form videos in the past 365 days or 3 million qualifying public Shorts views in the past 90 days. The page associates this tier with access to memberships, Supers, Super Thanks, and Shopping, subject to each feature’s own criteria.

The same overview lists a separate tier requiring 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualifying public watch hours from long-form videos in the past 365 days or 10 million qualifying public Shorts views in the past 90 days, alongside additional monetization features. These are program thresholds, not a guarantee that a particular feature is enabled for a channel. YouTube can change its thresholds and eligibility rules; confirm the current details in the YouTube monetization overview and in YouTube Studio.
How do I turn on Super Chat on YouTube Live?
- Check eligibility: In YouTube Studio, review the Earn section and the channel’s feature cards. YouTube says creators with access can find Supers there. Confirm that the channel is in YPP, you meet the age requirement, your location is supported, and the applicable commerce terms are accepted.
- Open the feature in Studio: Go to YouTube Studio → Earn and check the Supers or fan-funding feature card. Follow the on-screen prompts to enable the feature if it is available. YouTube’s interface and feature availability can vary by account.
- Check the specific stream: Super Chat and Stickers cannot be used on an age-restricted, unlisted, private, Made for Kids, or YouTube Giving fundraiser video. They are also unavailable if live chat or comments are turned off.
- Plan the stream around the audience: Decide whether a highlighted message, animated sticker, or recurring members-only perks fit the content and audience. YouTube’s live monetization guidance recommends choosing revenue sources that suit both.

Why is Super Chat unavailable on my live stream?
First distinguish channel-level access from stream-level eligibility. A channel may qualify for YPP or have Supers in Studio, while a particular video still fails the feature rules.

- The video is Made for Kids: Supers are unavailable for Made for Kids content.
- The stream is a YouTube Giving fundraiser: Super Chat and Stickers are unavailable on those videos.
- Live chat or comments are off: Check the stream’s chat settings; Supers require live chat or comments to be available.
- Your location or the viewer’s location is unsupported: Availability is geographically limited and can differ by feature. Consult YouTube’s current location guidance rather than assuming it works everywhere.
YouTube’s feature rules and supported-location lists can change. Its current Super Chat and Super Stickers help page is the reference for stream restrictions and availability.

How do YouTube channel memberships work?
Viewers make recurring monthly payments in return for members-only perks that the creator defines. YouTube gives badges and emoji as examples. Memberships are therefore suited to channels that can offer ongoing community benefits, while Super Chat and Stickers are individual purchases tied to live chat.
Available membership levels, channel-specific criteria, and location availability are not identical for every account. Check the memberships card in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s current commerce-product requirements before announcing a tier or perk. Do not promise a specific set of price levels based on another channel’s setup.

Are Super Chat purchases donations?
No. YouTube explicitly says, “Super Chat and Super Stickers aren’t crowdfunding or donation tools.” They are paid platform features, and creators and viewers remain responsible for applicable laws. YouTube also says that if it removes a violating Super, its portion of the revenue is donated to charity. That policy does not make an ordinary Super a charitable donation, and it does not establish a particular tax treatment for a creator or viewer. Read YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Stickers policies for the current terms.
What other ways can creators earn on YouTube?
Fan funding is only part of YouTube monetization. YouTube’s overview also lists advertising revenue, Shopping, YouTube Premium revenue, and Super Thanks. Each has its own eligibility and terms, so treat them as separate options rather than assuming access to one feature includes the others.
