If YouTube buffers mostly in the evening on Hathway broadband, compare the same device and location over Wi-Fi and Ethernet, then repeat the checks during a quieter hour. That helps distinguish a Wi-Fi or device issue from a broader connection problem; an evening pattern alone does not prove Hathway network congestion. Record the results before changing your plan or buying equipment.
Start with a repeatable comparison
Run these checks while buffering is happening, then repeat them at a quieter time using the same device and location. Hathway notes that speed-test results can vary with network congestion and available bandwidth, so one result is not a diagnosis. Hathway’s broadband FAQ discusses that variation.
- Record the conditions. Note the date and time, device, room, Wi-Fi or wired connection, speed-test result, YouTube playback quality, and whether downloads, cloud backups, video calls, or other streams are active.
- Check the same device near the router. Play YouTube beside the router, then at the usual viewing spot. This helps reveal whether distance, walls, or interference may be affecting Wi-Fi.
- Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi if possible. Connect a compatible computer or streaming device directly to the router with a LAN/Ethernet cable and compare playback at the same time. Hathway’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking whether the connection is wireless or direct LAN, and says a cable is generally faster and more reliable than wireless. This comparison does not by itself identify whether a problem lies with the router, device, provider network, or test server.
- Pause competing activity. Temporarily stop large downloads, backups, video calls, and other high-bandwidth use, then repeat the test. Hathway notes that active devices share available bandwidth. Its FAQ also recommends comparing another device and checking the router and service status if several devices are affected.
- Repeat at a quieter time. Keep the device, location, and connection type the same, and log the result. TRAI points subscribers to its MySpeed App/Portal for broadband measurements; it also says providers must disclose typical speeds in their tariff offerings. See TRAI’s broadband FAQ.
Use YouTube’s playback checks
YouTube Help recommends testing the connection near the TV, adjusting video quality, restarting the app or device, checking for system updates, and trying another supported device. Its current troubleshooting page recommends at least 7 Mbps connection speed for HD streaming; that is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback or a statutory broadband minimum. If it does, the connection available to that device may not be keeping up with the selected quality at that moment.
- Quit and reopen YouTube, restart the device, and check for app or system updates.
- Try another supported device on the same connection. If only one device buffers, a device or app issue is plausible, but the comparison does not prove the cause.
- For live programming, YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can cause issues or delay even on a good network. Lowering broadcast delay is not a general fix for ordinary viewer-side buffering.
Read the results without jumping to a cause

When to contact Hathway
Contact Hathway Broadband at 1800 419 3114 if multiple devices remain affected, especially when the wired comparison also shows repeatable problems. The number and complaint process are listed on Hathway’s contact page; confirm current support channels there if they may have changed.

Give support the evening time range, the quieter-hour comparison, device and connection types, speed readings, and whether other household activity was paused. Ask them to log the issue and keep the complaint reference or docket number. Hathway says unresolved complaints, or resolutions the customer considers unsatisfactory, can be escalated to its Appellate Authority under the applicable process.
Should you upgrade your Hathway plan?
Do not upgrade based only on a high advertised speed elsewhere or a single evening speed test. First check whether the usable connection is inadequate for the household’s concurrent demand, and whether results are poor on more than one device and over Ethernet. An upgrade cannot by itself fix poor Wi-Fi coverage or an underlying service fault. TRAI does not prescribe a minimum broadband download or upload speed; providers must state typical speeds in tariff offerings, and TRAI’s FAQ describes a requirement that at least 90% of measured test samples meet or exceed the declared typical speed. Check your own plan and the applicable terms rather than treating YouTube’s HD recommendation as a legal minimum.
