If a YouTube bhajan stream went offline after FFmpeg reconnected, the reconnect alone does not identify the cause. First determine whether FFmpeg exited, the Hindi playlist input stopped, FFmpeg could not write to YouTube, YouTube rejected the feed, or the video reached an encoding-health problem. These failures occur at different points in the pipeline and need different fixes. Without the FFmpeg command and logs or the matching YouTube Live Control Room status, the specific cause cannot be confirmed.
Trace the failure before changing reconnect settings
Think of the stream as two connections: FFmpeg reads the playlist or media input, then sends an encoded feed to YouTube. A reconnect option aimed at an HTTP input can address some input interruptions; it does not establish that the output connection recovered or that YouTube resumed the live event.
- Check whether FFmpeg exited. Inspect process supervision and timestamped FFmpeg stderr or log output at the time the stream went offline. An exited process, a process that is still running but stalled, and a running process whose output is rejected are distinct cases.
- Check the playlist input. Identify which item was playing at the outage. Look for an input open/read error, an unexpected end of file (EOF), or a pause in packet delivery. Determine whether the playlist advanced as expected.
- Check the output path separately. Look for socket, RTMP, or YouTube write errors in the same log window. If input continues but output writing fails, changing input reconnect flags may not address the fault.
- Match the log time to YouTube’s status. Record the exact message or health warning in YouTube Live Control Room and compare it with the FFmpeg timestamps. A generic “offline” state alone does not distinguish a connection problem from an encoding issue.
Verify YouTube’s destination and session
YouTube requires an encoder to use a server URL and stream key. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address” in Manage live stream settings. Treat the key as a secret: redact it from commands, screenshots, and logs before sharing them.
In Live Control Room, confirm that the encoder is configured for the intended stream/session and that its server URL and key match the current settings. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder cannot start. That makes key/session verification a useful check, particularly for a startup failure; it does not establish that a key caused every mid-stream outage.

Use FFmpeg reconnect options for the failure they cover
FFmpeg documents reconnect options for HTTP input behavior, including retrying after a disconnection, treating EOF as an error when configured, and setting retry limits and delays. Those options can be relevant when a network-delivered playlist or media input fails or ends unexpectedly. Check the documentation for the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build: FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Before changing a flag, identify whether the log points to a transient input-network error, input EOF, or an output-side failure. Set retry limits and delays intentionally rather than assuming indefinite retries will restore a live event. If the output write failed, investigate how the output connection and FFmpeg process are managed. FFmpeg also documents FIFO muxer output handling and recovery options, but whether that design fits depends on the actual failure and setup; it is not a guaranteed remedy for an unexamined YouTube outage. Check YouTube’s stream-health warning
When YouTube reports an encoder or stream configuration problem, use the specific Live Control Room warning rather than adding unrelated retries. YouTube’s Live API ingestion health guidance covers categories including audio and video presence, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, and consistency between primary and backup streams where relevant. Compare the reported issue with FFmpeg’s output and correct the parameter YouTube identifies.
Collect the details needed to isolate the cause
If the issue persists, preserve a compact, redacted record for diagnosis. Include:

- FFmpeg version and build information.
- The command used, with the stream key and any other credentials removed.
- Timestamped log lines immediately before, during, and after the reconnect or outage.
- Whether FFmpeg exited, remained active, or was restarted by a supervisor.
- The playlist item’s status at the time: opened, reached EOF, failed, or stopped delivering packets.
- The corresponding YouTube Live Control Room status and exact health message.
Do not post the stream key. These details can distinguish input EOF or network trouble from failed output recovery, a session mismatch, or an encoding-health warning. The title of the incident alone cannot establish which one occurred.
